Quarterback drafting has become very interesting in recent seasons. There has been a significant uptick in quarterback production and it has brought about significant changes in the fantasy landscape http://www.team49ersmall.com/black-friday-joe-looney-jersey/ , especially during the draft. Until recently, it was almost unheard of to see a QB come off the board in the first round. Now, it is pretty common. In fact, this season, you are almost guaranteed to see 2 go in the first round, maybe even 3.
So let\'s talk a little strategy:
This discussion actually starts with Running Backs. Each year there is a handful of must have RB (2010 For Example: Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew, Ray Rice.) I couldn\'t in good conscience take a QB over any of these guys. After this elite tier, I couldn\'t fault someone for taking a top tier Quarterback (In 2010: Aaron Rodgers http://www.team49ersmall.com/black-friday-jimmie-ward-jersey/ , Drew Brees, Peyton Manning.)
My logic has to do with the question marks for the next group of Running Backs. Frank Gore now has Brian Westbrook, Steven Jackson was all yardage and no end zone last year, and Michael Turner\'s 2009 turned up some minor concerns. Having said that, I couldn\'t argue with someone taking a sure thing QB with a mid-late first round pick. The later the pick, the more I am fine with this strategy, because your turn will come back again soon enough for you to get a quality starting Running Back.
Okay, so the advice above may help you get through the first round and a half. The top 3 QB\'s will likely be gone by then. So what now?
Last year, 10 Quarterbacks threw for over 4,000 yards. Assuming your league is 10 teams and you can do basic division - that means you should have no problem landing one of those 10 guys. So don\'t jump too early to get one! The difference between QB\'s 4 through 10 is not terribly vast. If you see greater http://www.team49ersmall.com/black-friday-jerry-rice-jersey/ , scarcer value at WR or RB, you would be better served going that direction.
Keep an eye on how other teams are drafting and make sure you get one of those 4-10 QB\'s before other drafters start taking their backup QB\'s.
Backup QB:
Next, you still have to obtain a backup QB. In a nutshell, the best strategy here is to get a good QB in Round 1 that you believe is worth a start almost every week of the season. If you can do that, then you only need a backup QB to cover your bye week or if your first QB gets injured.
Every draft is different, so you\'ll still have to do some of your own thinking, but having a plan and knowing that you can fit in another RB or WR while some other teams chase after fairly even Quarterbacks should help take off some of the pressure.
ALWAYS TAKE A KICKER LAST...Unless:
Yes, it is true what they say. You should always take a kicker last.
So let\'s start with that premise. Why should you (almost) always wait to take a kicker until the final round of the draft? Using 2009 stats and assuming a 10 team 1 Kicker league, the top scoring Kicker put up 146 points while the 10th ranked Kicker went for 118 points - a difference of 28 points, which averages out to 1.75 points per game - not a big deal.
If you missed out on one of the top 3 finishers last year http://www.team49ersmall.com/jeff-driskel-49ers-jersey/ , the range dropped from 129 points (4th) to 118 points (10th), averaging out to a .68 points per game difference - pathetic.
The other reality is that kicker production is really hard to predict. How many of you picked David Akers to finish 2nd last season? Any one of the Kickers that finished 6-12 could have put up 1 extra field goal in 6 of their 16 games and climbed into the Top 5 or better.
Taking a Kicker early also means that you are leaving sleepers and high upside players at impact positions on the board. Those potential contributors might not last the duration of the draft or hang around in free agency too long. Meanwhile, you\'ll more than likely be able to find a comparable Kicker anytime you need one throughout the season.
Basically, in standard leagues drafting a kicker last remains one of the cardinal rules of most fantasy football draft strategies, but there could be an occasional exception.
If your league rules and settings vary far enough from the standard, you may find a good reason to break the rule. For instance, if your league requires you to keep 2 Kickers you shouldn\'t wait until the last 2 rounds. One can wait until the end, but you should take your first one a few rounds sooner. I recommend gauging how other teams are drafting. Just make sure you get 1 quality kicker before other teams start filling in their second Kicker. . Booking Reservation for 1st Driver Available.
