We just wanted to get some chances and capitalize on some chances." Couturiers line had a big night as his linemates, Scott Hartnell and Matt Read, each had a goal and two assists. "They just keep plugging along and doing the right things," Berube said about the group. "They keep back-checking and that puts them in the right position for offence." Steve Downie and Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist each for Philadelphia. Steve Mason stopped 32 shots. Philadelphia finished 3 for 3 on the power play. Tomas Tatar scored twice and centre Johan Franzen also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 28 saves. "In the end I thought we had things going pretty good for ourselves through two. The third period wasnt good enough, they were better than us," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "They were better than us because they lit us up on the power play." Giroux tied it at 3, with a power-play goal 5:15 into the third period. He got his fifth goal, on a shot from the top of the left circle. Hartnell made it 5-3 with a power-play goal 9:58 into the third for his sixth goal. Couturier added an empty-net goal in the last minute. Read scored from the front of the net with 3:22 remaining in the second to pull the Flyers within 3-2. It was his ninth goal. Detroit scored twice in less than two minutes in the middle of the second period to go up 3-1. Franzen beat Mason with a slap shot from the top of the left circle off the rush to break a tie at 8:24. It was Franzens eighth goal. Tatar got his second goal of the game on a 5-on-3 power play by putting in a loose puck from a goal-mouth scramble with 9:47 left in the middle period. It was Tatars fifth goal. The Red Wings Justin Abdelkader hit the post on a partial breakaway with 1:32 left in the first. Tatars first goal of the game opened the scoring with 9:43 left in the opening period on a one-time shot from the bottom of the left circle. Downies power-play goal tied it with 6:12 remaining in the first period. He beat Howard with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right circle. It was Downies second goal. NOTE: The Red Wings were without both of their star centres, Pavel Datsyuk and captain Henrik Zetterberg. A replay showed Mathieu flipped the ball to an official just before he crossed the goal-line, but no one on the field caught the blunder. On Georgias first possession of the second half, quarterback Aaron Murray tried to scramble for a first down but had the ball knocked loose just before he hit the turf. He avoided or broke away from at least eight of the 11 red-clad guys trying to bring him down, a Heisman-worthy play that should be enough to at least get him to New York for the banquet -- if not earn serious consideration for the award as the nations top player. Certainly, no defensive player has come up with more game-changing plays. "As the conference champion in the SEC and being one of the key players on that team, I think he needs real consideration," coach Les Miles said. "Hes a special player. He has a special place." The Tigers longest play in the first half was nine yards. Eleven of their 21 plays went for zero or negative yards. Outside of Mathieu, punter Brad Wing was LSUs best weapon, averaging 54.1 yards on his first seven punts. Both offences stalled in the second quarter, managing a grand total of two yards -- one for each team. Georgia went to the locker-room with a commanding 135-12 lead in total yards, but certainly a sense it had missed its chance to put away an LSU team that had outscored No. 6 Arkansas 41-3 after falling into an early 14-0 hole. Hilliard scored on a four-yard run after Mathieus second long return to make it 21-10, essentially enough to finish off the Bulldogs, but the freshman runner then hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass for good measure. The Tigers romped in the final period. Alfred Blue broke off a 48-yard touchdown run and Morris Claiborne returned an interception 45 yards for the final score. LSU won even though Jordan Jefferson completed only five passes and the offence totalled a mere 237 yards. Murray had a miserable day, completing just 16 of 40 for 163 yards with two interceptions. Georgias running game was non-existent with Isaiah Crowell hobbling on a sore ankle. The freshman had only 15 yards on 10 carries.
