Luke Donald, the current world number one, tied for fourth and is considered by many to be the best player who has yet to win a major. Justin Rose and Lee Westwood are similarly dangerous, and both finished 11th last year. But in large part, the 2011 Masters is remembered more for the final-round collapse of Rory McIlroy than the victory by Charl Schwartzel. McIlroy, who led by four strokes after three rounds, blew up with a final-round 80 to drop all the way to 15th place. And yet the Northern Irishman responded in a big way just two months later at the U.S. Open, crushing the field by eight shots at Congressional Country Club. For TSN golf analyst Jim Nelford, its McIlroy who stands as the favourite for this years Masters. "Im still picking Rory McIlroy. He is so talented, and he is on an absolute run," Nelford explained on Gamenight on TSN Radio 1050 this week. "He has not played a bad tournament in such a long time, and hes been in contention every time he plays. Hes going to go in there ready, he feels like hes got something to prove, and hes got a number of wins behind his belt." For McIlroy, who turns 23 on May 4, the past twelve months have provided an opportunity for him to come of age, especially after the meltdown at Augusta. "McIlroy is so much improved. McIlroy has improved more than Tiger has improved, if you can believe that," said Nelford. "He put himself to number one in the world (hes now second behind Donald), he has a wonderful putting stroke, hes fearless, hes very, very mature, and he is going to go past Tiger on his climb to improving. I think hes going to improve more than Tiger can possibly improve. "Tiger is coming back, yes, but Rory is the best player in the world right now," added Nelford.
