LIENZ, Austria -- Marlies Schild won her fourth straight race in womens World Cup slalom skiing Thursday, while 16-year-old American Mikaela Shiffrin was third to become the youngest female racer on a World Cup slalom podium in 33 years. Schild, who now has a career tally of 31 victories in the discipline, had two flawless runs to finish in an aggregate one minute 51.42 seconds and beat second-place Tina Maze of Slovenia by 0.79 seconds. Shiffrin started her eighth World Cup event as No. 40, ended the opening run in 12th position before posting the fastest time in the final run. She finished 1.30 behind Schild, who lost 0.24 to Shiffrin in the final run. Shiffrin, who became the youngest American national slalom champion last spring, impressed with an all-attacking yet error-free second run, in which she made many turns extremely close to the gates. "I have been working so hard for this moment," said Shiffrin, who finished eighth in the Aspen slalom last month. "Schild, Zettel, Hosp, Vonn; I have been watching all these top girls for the past 10 years. And now I am here myself, it really feels crazy." While Shiffrin stepped onto the podium for the first time, the 30-year-old Schild equalled Vreni Schneiders record with her 47th World Cup slalom podium. Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchmenin, Que., was the top Canadian in 14th place. "I was quite disappointed with my first run. I skied well but I just didnt have that fire I needed to get in the top 10," said Gagnon, who was 18th after the first run. "Im happy because the second run was better." Erin Mielzynski of Guelph, Ont., was 22nd. Madison Irwin of Toronto and Elli Terwiel of Heffley Creek, B.C., did not qualify. Shiffrin said she was impressed by meeting Schild, one of her idols. "Its the first time Ive been talking to Marlies in person," Shiffrin said. "I couldnt believe she was congratulating me after the race. What a moment!" Schild was just as excited by the teenagers performance. "Of course I saw her in Aspen, shes a real talent," Schild said. "I see a lot of myself in the way she is skiing. She has what it takes to become a great champion in the near future." Shiffrins American teammate Lindsey Vonn finished 18th and retained the lead in the overall standings. The three-time champion has 612 points, followed by Schild with 440 and Austrias Anna Fenninger, who usually skips slalom, with 368. Defending overall champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany made costly mistakes in the final part of both runs and finished ninth, 1.99 behind Schild. In the overall standings, Hoefl-Riesch is fifth with 326 points. After a solid first run, Vonn lost speed and time going into the final section of her second run, finishing 3.01 off the lead. Vonn hasnt been on a slalom podium for more than two years. "Its getting closer (to the podium)," she said. "I am hoping to get back in the (starting) top 15 and that will help a lot." Vonn said she has gained confidence in the technical events again this season, helped by her victory in the giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, in October. "I know I have the speed, its a matter of putting two runs together," she said. "I just feel comfortable in any race right now. Every time I am in the starting gate, I am going to try to win. I am just having fun." Vonns American teammate Julia Mancuso skied out just a few seconds after the start of her first run when her right ski hit a gate and she lost balance. After a short break, the womens World Cup will continue Tuesday with another slalom event in Zagreb, Croatia. Cameron Wake Jersey . The Oilers signed the young forward to a US$42-million, seven-year contract extension Wednesday and the Calgary native said he had no hesitation about the length of the deal. "When they said seven years I didnt blink," the 20-year-old Hall said. "Im comfortable being here for that long. I think by that time ... I hope were a perennial threat. Thats my main goal and my mindset when I signed the deal." Hall was the Oilers first overall pick in 2010 and has since become a key fixture on the teams youthful top line alongside fellow first overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle. "You have to have complete belief in the player and our organization obviously does," said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini. "He just brings such a complete level to our organization. He grabs the rope and pulls everybody along." The deal makes Hall the highest paid player on the Oilers in average salary at $6 million per year. Veteran centre Shawn Horcoff, who signed a hefty six-year, $33-million deal in 2009-10, will make $6 million next season but averages a lower cap hit at $5.5 million. Eberle is also in negotiations for a contract extension and likely looking for similar money to Hall. Eberle made his rookie debut the same year as Hall and is coming off a breakout season with a tteam-high 34 goals and 76 points.dddddddddddd. "Weve had some good dialogues throughout this whole thing and I think his should be pretty soon," Hall said of his linemate. "Hes along the same path, he wants to be here and so do I." Tambellini wouldnt reveal where the Oilers are in making deal with Eberle. "Weve had some discussions but I dont have anything to report at this time," he said. The Oilers have been in rebuilding mode for several years now. Last season they finished 29th in the NHL with a 32-40-10 record. Hall finished second behind Eberle in scoring with 27 goals and 26 assists in 61 games. His season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, but says hes four and half months into a six-month recovery and feeling close to being game-ready. "Its good, Im really positive about it," said Hall. "Im not going to say Im perfect on Day 1 but it feels really good now and Im excited about the process of being healthy." Halls numbers last season were slightly up from his rookie campaign when he had 22 goals and 20 assists in 65 games in another injury-shortened season. Hall and Nugent-Hopkins were the first and second, respectively, of Edmontons three straight first overall picks in the last three NHL drafts. In June, the Oilers chose Russian forward Nail Yakupov, who signed an entry-level, three-year deal last month. cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys \' \' \'
