Facing a barrage of questions Monday at a news conference at Wembley Stadium, Pearce said he considered only form and fitness for his final squad. And Beckhams form wasnt good enough. "I dont think theres a football manager around who picks on sentiment," said Pearce, who was grilled on a live television broadcast about the former England captains omission. "My opening gambit to all the players was there are no guarantees. They have to come through the door on form and form alone." The 37-year-old Beckham had been hoping to be part of the first British football squad at the Olympics since 1960. Pearce, now public enemy No. 1 among Beckhams millions of fans and reportedly some top sports officials, said he knew hed have to stand by his decision. Beckham was told by Pearce on Thursday night that he wasnt in the final 18-man squad, with the three over-age places allowed at the Olympic tournament instead going to Beckhams former teammate, Ryan Giggs of Manchester United, Liverpool forward Craig Bellamy and Manchester City defender Micah Richards. Although Beckham backed Pearces squad in a statement, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder was believed to be inconsolable at being overlooked. Beckham was "very disappointed" when he told him in a telephone call, Pearce said. He was the first of the players cut from the initial 35-man group to be told the bad news. "I know he had a real burning passion to be part of this squad. I understand that. I thought it was right and proper that he heard from me directly," Pearce said. There also was no place on the football teams backroom staff for Beckham, but he could have a role with the wider British Olympic team. "I totally, utterly respect Stuarts professional judgment and decision as to the 18 players he selected," the British teams Chef de Mission, Andy Hunt, said. "But more broadly from the perspective of David potentially having some role with Team GB, that would be fantastic. Ive actually made contact with his representatives over the weekend and we will wait to see how that moves forward." Hunt didnt give details on what Beckhams role might be, but one thing it wont be is bending his trademark free kicks on the field. Many argued that Beckhams pivotal role as a local London lad with superstar Hollywood draw who had worked tirelessly in the final stages of the bidding process was worth a place on the squad. He also took part in countless Olympic activities in the run-up to the games, including accompanying the Olympic flame on a flight from Greece to England and lighting a cauldron to mark the start of the British torch relay. He was always set to be a headliner at the games just a few miles from where he grew up but, barring a late injury call-up, it wont be as a competitor. "From the offset, when I was given the opportunity to manage this team I was given the job to manage," Pearce said. "I looked at form, fitness of players, availability, and in that respect I deemed this was the best squad available. "Im acutely aware that there was a contentious issue over the three over-age players. But I have to be comfortable when I get into bed at night that I have made decisions only on footballing grounds. It was not personality." Pearce insisted he had "a duty of care" to pick the best-possible squad for Britains Olympic campaign, even though he had "vast respect" for Beckham as a person and for his achievements. A rugged defender for England during his international career in the 1980s and 90s, Pearce also denied thered been any political pressure to pick Beckham and give the Olympics an ideal marketing boost. If there was, he wouldnt have taken the job, he said defiantly. "I do enough hours watching matches and I think Ive done due diligence on all the players here ... Im a football man and I pick solely on football ability," Pearce said. Nike Air Max 90 Essential . Hope springs eternal for all those teams that need to turn the corner and succeed. Here are a few quick thoughts. FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. TORONTO RAPTORS: The Draft is the beginning of what should be a busy and fascinating off-season. The team has multiple needs, as well as a lack of a deep talent pool. Bottom line, the eighth overall pick will be in play if there is a dance partner to do a deal with. I fully expect the Raps to try to make a run at free agents on the market with their cap space. Theyll also look to be active in the trade market and use the amnesty exemption as well. So many moving pieces in play where one move will have significant ripple effects on the dynamics of other possible transactions. Bottom line, they need to figure out the long- and mid-term plan at point guard, acquire a starting small forward, and upgrade the athleticism and skill level at all the perimeter spots. Four years without a Playoff game with new owners in place soon; time to start showing significant progress. 2. DANNY FERRY (Hawks): Hired as the GM with a six-year deal. Coach Larry Drew will get a chance based upon his contract extension to see things through a bit, but with a new boss and a team thats good but not great, the Hawks have big decisions to make on how long they stick with their core group after being eliminated in the first round of the Playoffs. You have enough success, you draft lower each year, have to pay big money to your core guys (example: Joe Johnson) and your available cap space diminishes. You have to make the right moves on the complimentary players with limited money. Ferry did a good job in Cleveland even though he came up short with LeBron. Hes a good basketball man who will be bold when need be. Good is the Enemy of Great - no better example thaan this franchise.dddddddddddd 3. JARED SULLINGER (Ohio State): Not invited to the Draft due to not being projected in the Top 15. I feel bad for him. If he came out last year, he would have easily been a Top 5 pick - now hes fighting for mere respect as his stock plummets due alleged back issues and not being a workout wonder. Hes an effective post player, and in the right system, with the proper coach who understands big men play, hell be a good pro. Needless to say, hell have a huge chip on his shoulder. Prove it. Hes a guy I wouldnt count out. 4. DION WAITERS (Syracuse): This guy intrigues me. Hes a combo guard who is more of a scoring minded 2-guard. I think he can be a very good third guard for a long time in the league. Hes got good creativity and scoring ability. Love his quicks and burst. Might be a better pro than he was in college. If he gets with a team that pushes it a bit, and gets a chance to play decent rookie minutes, he can be one of the really good players in this class. 5. UNC BIGS (JOHN HENSON & TYLER ZELLER): These guys will go in the top 12 and in my opinion, and the teams that get them will be very pleased. Henson has a long ways to go as an offensive player, and needs to get stronger, but he can block shots and rebound and runs exceptionally well for a big man. His game is a bit awkward yet he produces and keeps getting better. Zeller is a wonderfully gifted post player who has good hands, terrific skills, good footwork and excellent feel for his role. He has to improve his stamina and toughness, but hell be a good player in the NBA for a long time. He has the motor and desire to succeed and is very coachable. Lots of good big men in this draft, these two have big-game experience and solid polish/understanding of what it means to play really hard and with purpose in the trenches. cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys \' \' \' |
