Usually I write the match reports pretty much straight after the game, but yesterday was different. The 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane may have been expected, but the level of performance was so low that it left me lost for words.Newcastle rarely threatened 2013 Barcelona Jersey Tottenham goal throughout the match, even when the home side were reduced to ten men. More often than not I try to find the positives and adopt a glass half full approach, but it is something that is proving to be very hard after yesterday s defeat. One win in eight games is relegation form, and makes our upcoming games against Wigan and West Ham vitally important. The hosts started brightly and had the first shot at goal just two minutes into game through Aaron Lennon. Rafael Van Der Vaart and Luka Modric were moving the ball around well for Tottenham, but despite the inventiveness of those two players, Newcastle survived and forced their way into the game.It took 25 minutes for the away team to register their first shot at goal, and predictably it was registered by Andy Carroll who looped a Jonas Gutierrez cross onto the roof of the net. Cheik Tiote had the next chance as he capitalised on a mistake by Wilson Palacios and shot from 25-yards, but his attempt was easily saved by Heurelho Gomes in the Tottenham goal.Gareth Bale broke free and burst into the box only to be thwarted by a last ditch Alan Smith tackle, and Roman Pavlyuchenko could have put the home side one up on the stroke of half time, but Tim Krul produced a world class save and palmed his attempt onto the post Kobe 8 Electric watching the ball bounce across the face of goal and onto the other post. It was goalless at half-time, and it was probably just about the right result to be fair. Tottenham had a few chances, but Newcastle did well to restrict their play and keep a fair amount of possesion themselves. It stayed at deadlock until the 57th minute when Aaron Lennon broke free down the right and ran at James Perch. The defender backed off him which afforded Lennon the time and space he needed to dispatch a low shot into the back of Tim Krul s net. 1-0.The next action came on 66 minutes when Younes Kaboul lost his cool and leaned his head into Cheik Tiote. It wasn t a headbutt in my opinion, but it was enough to persuade the referee to get the red card out and gave Kaboul the chance to have an early shower. This resulted in Harry Redknapp bringing on a defender for Roman Pavlyuchenko and Alan Pardew bringing on an extra striker in the shape of Nile Ranger who replaced the Nike 2013 Mercurial X ineffectual Jonas Gutierrez.I would have expected Newcastle to press for an equaliser, but with Joey Barton, among others, playing below par they struggled to create much despite the numerical advantage. They paid the price with ten minutes remaining when Gareth Bale easily got past Steven Taylor and fired a poweful shot past Tim Krul from a narrow angle. That pretty much ended the game as a contest and the game petered out with Tottenham keeping most of the ball and playing it safe, which they had the right to do after being two goals up.It is disappointing that we never really threatened the Tottenham goal. Andy Carroll is becoming our only source of attacking play, and whilst we may be missing some players who can help him out, like Kevin Nolan or Hatem Ben Arfa, what is clear for all to see is that if you stop Carroll, you stop Newcastle.Joey Barton was also disappointing on the day. Having been handed the armband I expected to see more from him. He was the man who was charged with linking up with Carroll and doing what Nolan does, but if we can gain anything from this game it is the fact that Barton can t be used as that kind of player. Our wing play is virtually non-existant, and Tottenham showed us just how important the wings can be with regard to attcking. After all, it was their wingers who did the damage on the day.Newcastle need to bounce back from this, quickly, and head to Wigan next week with the aim of getting the three points. Kevin Nolan will be back, which is good news as we missed him yesterday in my opinion.Howay the lads!Tottenham: Huerelho Gomes, Alan Hutton, Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Aaaron Lennon, Luka Modric, Wilson Palacios, Gareth Bale, Rafael Van Der Vaart, Roman Pavlyuchenko.Subs: Stipe Pletikosa, Sebastien Bassong, Vedran Corluka, Niko Krancjar, Jermaine Jenas, Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch.Newcastle: Tim Krul, Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, James Perch, Wayne Routledge, Cheik Tiote, Alan Smith, Joey Barton, Jonas Gutierrez, Andy Carroll.Subs: Steve Harper, Mike Williamson, Tamas Kadar, Peter Lovenkrands, Xisco, Leon Best, Nile Ranger.Attendance: 35,927. @uc@2gi3h12bb8@uc@ |
