-- 作者:sonyaany -- 发布时间:2015-7-24 15:24:17 -- Ray Ban Sale My latest book is Newton\'s Football: The Science Behind America\'s Game, published by Ballantine in November 2013. My other books include The Billion Dollar Game: Behind the Scenes at the Super Bowl and Clapton\'s Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument. For five years I wrote the By the Numbers sports analytics column for the Wall Street Journal. I have written about sports, music, entertainment, pop culture and politics for a wide variety of national publications including The New York Times Magazine, Salon, Rolling Stone, Men\'s Journal, The Daily Beast, The Washington Post and The Village Voice. with my wife, two kids, and my golden retriever, Tessie. They\'re both running quarterbacks who trouble defenses with their versatility, and sometimes trouble their own coaches with their less than accurate passing and improvisational decision making. But as cultural figures, they\'re polar opposites. Vick, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback, was convicted of a variety of crimes related to a dog fighting ring. When Vick was released from prison, he was a lightning rod for controversy. The Philadelphia Eagles signed him, and fans and animal rights activists protested long and loud. Vick ultimately worked his way into the team\'s starting job and played well enough to keep it. The hue and cry continued, but for Coach Andy Reid and his staff, it wasn\'t a problem. Reid was trying to win football games, and bucking the tide of public opinion only made him look more decisive. Tebow, on the other hand, presents exactly the opposite problem for his next team. A devoted and very public Christian, Tebow has a huge and immensely vocal fan base that goes well beyond Denver. These supporters, many of whom are only casual football fans, badgered Broncos management into putting their favorite player in the lineup and celebrated every touchdown with him as an affirmation of their shared faith. Tebow became a pop culture figure, and in the NFL, where there\'s no "I" in "team," he began to wear out his welcome. If Tebow was a truly star as his fans insists that he is this would be less of a problem. (Indeed, if he was a star, the Broncos wouldn\'t have pursued Peyton Manning in the first place.) Instead Tebow occupies an uncomfortable middle ground, too famous to be a backup, but not quite accomplished enough to be a solid starter. Supporters point to his 7 4 record which included six game winning drives, while detractors point to his 46.5 percent pass completion rate and his 14 fumbles. In addition, Tebow\'s unconventional style and his left handedness, require a team to build a system around him to maximize his value. Now that he\'s on his way out of Denver, Tebow seems destined to end up on a team where he\'ll be the backup, at least at first. Which will place the quarterback and the coaching staff of his next team under intense and immediate pressure. Every loss and even every incomplete pass will become a reason to fans to agitate for Tebow to be elevated to the starting job as he was in Denver. And of course, Tebow\'s very public faith complicates matters for teams; Google churns out more hits for "Tebow" and "miracle" than for "Tebow" and "wide receiver." The very same qualities that could probably win Tebow the Republican Presidential Nomination (if, of course, Oakley Outlet Store he were old enough to run for President) also make him a bigger star than even Peyton Manning. And for most NFL teams where the organization is bigger than any player, that\'s a double edged sword at best. Tebow\'s tide of popularity will likely create a lose lose situation for his next coach. If he puts the young QB in, he\'ll be seen as, um, Te bowing to public pressure. And if he resists the tide of fan sentiment, Tebow\'s supporters will only get louder and more vocal. And if he does get the starting job, Tebow then becomes virtually unbenchable. In the NFL, making the right decision is sometimes less important than how a coach looks doing it. Any coach concerned about his job security is likely to think long and hard about inviting a Tim Tebow driven quarterback controversy, because the debate Fake Oakleys Ray Ban Sale For Sale will soon be about everything but the ability to pick up a blitz or hit a receiver on an out pattern. Once the NFL\'s best loved player reports to camp, the meta message will be clear: it\'s Tebow\'s team, Coach, and you\'re just wearing the headset. Malik, thanks for joining the conversation. Is Vick a better quarterback right now than Tebow is? Yes. But Vick is 31 years old and a nine year veteran. He should be playing better. The relevant comparison for Tebow, as I suggested above, is Vick\'s first couple of years. Vick also playing much better in Philadelphia than he did in Atlanta. For example, Vick\'s QB rating during six seasons in Atlanta was 75.7, which is virtually identical to the number you cited for Tebow. As for college stats, they\'re not directly comparable to NFL stats, but I think they mean something, especially when they\'re put up against elite competition as Tebow\'s were. Remember people used to think that minor league baseball numbers didn\'t matter either. |
