Just days after selecting Andrew Wenger with the top overall pick in the 2012 SuperDraft, a new era began in Montreal on Monday morning as the Impact players gathered together for the first time to kick off their preseason training camp ahead of the clubs inaugural Major League Soccer season. "Im pleased with where we are at," said Jesse Marsch, who has been working towards this day since his appointment as the clubs head coach in August last year. "It was a good first day and there was a positive energy out there. Building a squad is a long process but we are pleased with the group we have. Now it is time for us to start working together, molding the team, and seeing how all of the relationships work." Amongst the players who took to the training pitch with the Impact on Monday was 33-year-old forward Brian Ching, who was picked by Montreal from the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Expansion Draft last November. At the time, the selection of Ching was controversial as he had had stated his intent to retire if he was picked by the Impact. Since that day, there has been plenty of speculation about his future and there remains a big question mark as to whether he will still be in Impact colours when the season kicks off in March. However, when he met the Montreal media, he was saying all the right things about his commitment to helping the club achieve success. "I made an emotional decision at an emotional time and over the past few months, I have been able to reflect and I am here today to help the Impact win games," said Ching after the clubs first training session. "It is a new team and one of the challenges is to get to know everybody as quickly as possible and to try and set a good example." "I would have loved to have finished my career in Houston, especially because they are opening up a new stadium, but I am a professional and over the past two months, I have come to deal with that. I cant thank the fans enough for reaching out to me and wishing me good luck. It doesnt matter where I am, I am a competitive guy and just want to win. I do eventually want to retire in a Dynamo uniform and hopefully I can accomplish that, but right now I am definitely excited to be here in Montreal." Should Ching still be with the Impact on opening day in Vancouver on March 10, he will be an ideal player for an expansion club to have on the roster with his vast experience and leadership qualities. The Impacts management team has done a good job assembling a squad that has a strong presence of MLS veterans mixed in with younger players. With a roster that has plenty of options in defence and midfield, the cast he has assembled should be well organized and difficult to beat. There are still roster spots up for grabs, and amongst the players fighting for a spot on the team are five players from the Impacts NASL season last year. One of the men fighting for a job is former team captain Nevio Pizzolitto, who first signed for the club in 1995. Now he has to prove himself all over again. "My mentality going into this camp is to do well every time I step on the field," Pizzolitto told TSN. "I have to stay positive although everything is up in the air for me. I have to keep a good mindset and work hard. If I do that, hopefully everything will fall into place. I want to get involved and get to know the guys and try and mesh with the team, not just to be looked at as an outsider who hasnt signed." It is a strange situation for the defender who won championships with the club in 2004 and 2009, but he is determined to rise to the challenge again 17 years after first earning a place on the team. "It was the greatest feeling in the world back then because I was playing for my hometown." "It is incredible how the team has grown since then. It does feel like that first time again because I have to prove myself and hope that I will be able to wear that jersey because it means a lot to us Montrealers." "My goal is to make the team and contribute as much as I can to the success so that we can reach our goals this year. I feel that I have worked hard my whole career, sacrificed a lot over the years to be a professional soccer player and it makes you a stronger person. Im just happy to have a chance to try and make it to the next level with the club." Whether Pizzolitto makes the team or not, he will still be desperate to see the club succeed in its first season in Major League Soccer, and the 35-year-old insists expectations should be high despite the many difficulties expansion teams have faced in the past. "Even though we are an expansion team, we want to make the playoffs," he said. "We need to have a winning attitude and try to bring a championship back to Montreal."
