WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd thought there was plenty to like about his teams first-period performance Sunday night -- even though they found themselves trailing by two goals.

Ladd tied the game at 4-4 with 1:43 remaining on a quick shot from the left circle with Blake Wheeler screening goalie Antti Niemi. "We needed a goal at the end," said the left-winger, who notched his fifth goal of the season. "(Bryan Little) made a great play, and I tried to get it off as quick as I could." The Sharks were leading thanks to Dan Boyles second power-play goal of the game. The defenceman finished a precise play when Logan Coutures no-look, backhand pass set him up for an easy goal from point-blank range. Michael Frolik, Dustin Byfulgien and Grant Clitsome added goals for the Jets (8-9-2). Tomas Hertl and Tommy Wingels scored for the Sharks (10-2-5), who lost in a shootout for the third time in their last four games. Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec stopped Couture, Wingels and Boyle as Ladd scored the lone goal in the penalty-shot contest. Niemi stopped 42-of-46 shots for the Sharks, while Pavelec made 30 saves. The Jets, who scored four first-period goals against Nashville on Friday night, were buzzing around Niemi early, but the netminder kept the game scoreless. Winnipeg had a 10-2 lead in shots when Boyles point shot on the power play opened the scoring for San Jose at 14:04. Less than two minutes later, Jason Demers sprung Hertl on a breakaway with an 80-foot pass, and Hertl beat Pavelec with a deke to his forehand for his 10th goal of the season. "The way the game played out, I thought we had a really good first period," Ladd said. "A couple mistakes and were down 2-0. A lot of times its tough to come in and be positive, but I thought we did a good job of that, and a good job of sticking to our game plan." Jets coach Claude Noel thought his team responded well to the early two-goal deficit. "I thought we were resilient in the game," Noel said. "I thought we didnt lose our focus, we didnt lose our hope, and we easily could have after the first period. "To me it was a huge building block for our team." Even after Boyles second goal, as the game started to slip away, Noel said his bench believed it could force overtime. "We still felt there was time on the clock and we could get some stuff done," he said. Patrick Marleau appeared to have scored the overtime winner for San Jose, but the goal was disallowed when Wingels made contact in the crease with Pavelec. "Its a discretionary call that occurs in a game," said San Jose coach Todd McLellan, adding that ones opinion of the call would likely depend on which team they support. Pavelec thought the call was warranted, as he felt Wingels pushed him in the back. "We made stride as far as our competitiveness," McLellan said. "But I still dont think were at our best." The Jets have won back-to-back contests for the first time since the seasons first two games. The Jets drew even in the second period, beating Niemi three times on 17 shots. Frolik scored off a perfect cross-crease pass from Matt Halischuk to make it 2-1, only to see the Sharks restore their two-goal lead 41 seconds later on a high shot from in tight by Wingels. Byfuglien scored his first goal of the season -- on his 64th shot on goal -- to make it 3-2, and Clitsome drew the Jets even with a wrist shot through traffic from 50 feet out. Notes: A pre-game moment of silence was observed for Remembrance Day, and Second World War veteran Len Kropioski, a Jets season-ticket holder, joined anthem singer Stacey Nattrass on the ice. a The Jets struggles on the power play continued as they went 0 for 2. nfl jerseys china . -- Former AL MVP Miguel Tejada has made the Kansas City Royals opening-day roster as a utility infielder. He laced on his first pair of skates at age three when he stepped onto a homemade rink in his Regina backyard. Now Mathew Dumba is captaining Canadas under-18 team at the world championship and his offensive skills and puck sense have made him one of the top North American picks in the 2012 NHL entry draft. The six-foot, 183-pound defenceman had a goal and an assist as Canada pounded lightly regarded Denmark 6-1 to open preliminary play Thursday. Heady times for a 17-year-old but he seems to handle the pressure like an old pro. His says his dad Charles got him started in hockey. "Hes definitely a fan of the game. He played up until the junior (level) and then packed it in," Dumba said by phone from the Czech Republic, where Canada plays Finland on Saturday in their second game of the world championship. "He reffed at the WHL when he was younger and he just loves the game. He was probably my biggest influence." When he was about eight, Dumbas family moved to Calgary and thats where he was spotted and drafted at the bantam level by the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. He was their first round pick and 4th overall in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. The Rebels were riding comparatively high when he joined the team. They made it to the conference quarter-final in 2009-10 and the semifinal in 2010-11, after finishing first in the Central Division that season. "My first season I kind of had it made with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins there and some other skilled players like Byron Froese, Andrej Kudrna and guys who could really put the puck in the net. I dont think we had a losing streak over three games." Nugent-Hopkins was nabbed by the Edmonton Oilers as the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft. This injury-plagued season has been anything but golden for the Rebels, who Dumba notes went 13 games without winning at one point and missed the playoffs. "We kind of had to climb our way out of that and going through that I know Im better for it," said Dumba. "This year was kind of a year where youre learning a lot and learning a lot about yourself, dealing with all the different pressures, from the draft, from making your own personal acccomplishments like the world juniors and events like the prospects game.
Cheap Dallas Mavericks Jerseys. "There was a lot of things going on at once and controlling all those things was a big task for me." The pressure hasnt let up at the under-18 world championship. There are a lot of scouts and general managers watching his performance on the ice but Dumba says hes not going to think about that right now. "Youre not really thinking about that stuff. Youre thinking about the team and accomplishing our mission of winning the gold. "When Team Canada goes into tournaments were always striving to get gold and be our best." Dumba has already helped accomplish that for Canada at another event. He captained Canada to a gold medal at the 2011 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in August. When asked who in the NHL right now is the kind of player hed like to become, Dumba is quick to name Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings. "I think a lot of young defencemen like myself look up to him, and think hes a great player, all the stuff he accomplished in such a short time," he said. "Hes so efficient on the ice, he wins all his battles, hes got a great skill level, I think hes a pretty good guy to look up to." Canada hasnt won gold at the world under-18 championship since 2008, the last year it won a medal of any kind. The team is coached by Jesse Wallin, Dumbas regular coach with the Rebels. Wallin likes the mix on this squad. "I think were a nuts and bolts team," he said. "Weve got some good size up front. And, really, weve got some good skating defencemen in the backend, kids like Dumba and (Josh) Morrissey, those guys can really move their feet and are very mobile." The U.S. team has won gold the last three years straight and Dumba knows some might think Canadas odds are a bit long, with a team that gets assembled late from those who dont make their respective league playoffs. "At this tournament I know we might not be the favourite by any means but were definitely a contender and we think in our own minds we want to go out there and know that (if) were working hard and doing all the little things right, we have a chance to win."
