Last week brought an early start to draft season for fantasy hockey, as I took part in the Sixth Annual Experts League Draft. Cheap Cleveland Indians Jerseys . Ive been fortunate enough to win the league a couple of times, which is a real honour given the depth of the league and quality of opposition, but each year brings new challenges and this year my challenge is trying to defend the crown with a good, not great, keeper list. We keep four players per team, with a maximum of one goaltender, in a 12-team league with 25-man rosters. With a randomly drawn draft order, I was picking seventh, effectively beginning in the fifth round because each team had four keepers. I made the decision to keep Vokoun ahead of Pekka Rinne in goal, which I could come to regret, but my expectation is that the Washington Capitals have a better chance to contend this season, giving Vokoun a better chance to win more games. That Vokoun has more of a track record also weighs in his favour, even if it also means that hes old. Anyway, I reasoned, I might have a shot at Rinne, or another quality goaltender in the first round of the draft. Thats not quite how it played out as Carey Price and Antti Niemi (another of my castaways - I had loaded up on goaltending down the stretch to clinch my title) went 1-2, then Rinne went fifth, two spots before I was prepared to snap him up again. At that point, I called an audible and took the proverbial "best player available" in my estimation, Joe Thornton. With Henrik Sedin and Thornton, I should be covered on the assists front. I went to the goaltending well in Round Six, selecting Jaroslav Halak, who I expect to have a better year in St. Louis and should give me a solid tandem. With a good year, Halak could be my keeper for next season. With some uncertainty hanging over Doughty due to his contract status, I figured I should pay some attention to defence in Round Seven. Enter P.K. Subban, whose penalty minute totals make him extra appealing. In Round eight, I was prepared to continue addressing PIMs with a pick of Scott Hartnell, only to have Matt Romig take him the pick before my turn came up. Maybe I was slightly rattled, but I decided to go with Jamie Benn, who Ive been touting loudly as a possible breakout candidate -- putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak. Round Nine seemed like a fair time to give Jaromir Jagr a shot. There are safer picks out there, but I think hell make the season interesting for my team, one way or another. Youll note that once I took Thornton with my first pick, Ive essentially ignored centre, so I continued to stock my wings ni the next couple rounds. Nathan Horton (who Im sure Ive had in this league before), Tyler Ennis and Evander Kane were my picks in Rounds 10-12. Kane is another that I consider a possible breakout performer. I finally return to centre for Round 13, grabbing Jordan Staal, hoping for something similar to last years production over an entire year. Better late than never, I decide to give my defence at least cursory attention, adding John-Michael Liles, who was great for me early last season, but faded down the stretch. In Round 15, I grabbed Michal Neuvirth as a handcuff for Vokoun. As long as Braden Holtby doesnt somehow emerge as the Capitals starter, I feel like my team is in good hands with Washingtons goaltending. Another move for the wing, in Round 16, Erik Cole joins the team. Eligiblity on both wings helps and at this stage, he seems safe enough. Oh, defence, Ive ignored you so David Rundblad and Sheldon Souray in the next two rounds. Theres upside for both, but there is an element of risk to both since neither one played in the NHL last season. In Round 19, David Bolland was my sleeper pick for my fourth centre spot, followed by Andrej Meszaros, rounding out my mediocre defence corps. Todd Bertuzzi, Max Pacioretty, Artem Anisimov and Wayne Simmonds covered my picks in Rounds 20-24. For the final round, I looked at my blueline and decided to roll the dice on Avalanche defenceman Stefan Elliott. If he makes the team, he should put up some points. If not, Ill hit the waiver wire to find help. Some of the other picks of note: The first two picks of Round Seven, Milan Lucic and Ryane Clowe, by Maltais and Flowers, are nice points/penalty minutes producers. The keeper nature of the league is why he lasted until Round Eight, but thats great value for Lucarelli to get Nicklas Lidstrom. Katsaros selected James Reimer one pick ahead of where I was set to take him in Round 11. Gingerich getting Travis Hamonic to start Round 14 is a sharp move in my books, or would be if I had books on this stuff. Ryan Whitney, to Levine with the next pick, could be good value too. The first rookie off the board was Brayden Schenn, in the 16th Round, by Reynar. Romig took Tyler Seguin in the 17th round, right after I selected Rundblad, but my positional needs dictated defence at that point. From this years draft class, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went to Maltais with the last pick in Round 18, while Levine selected Gabriel Landeskog with the second-last pick of Round 19. I also liked Levines pick of Blake Wheeler in the 20th Round. Katsaros took Grant Clitsome in Round 22, right after my pick of Max Pacioretty, but I went back-and-forth before making my pick and hoped that Clitsome would last until the next round. Flowers pick of Wojtek Wolski in the 22nd round could pay off nicely if he ends up on the wing with Richards and Gaborik. Cubeta took an interesting chance on Nashvilles Ryan Ellis in the 21st round. He could be a power play force immediately, if he makes the team. Anyway, I feel like I got some players that I like and might have a chance to contend, but Im going to need some blueliners to come up big for me if Im going to hang in there. for those that are interested in tracking the proceedings, you should be able to see the league here.
