EAST RUTHERFORD, N.
Andrew Quarless Womens Jersey .J. -- Geno Smith bounced back in a big way after an early interception had memories of some recent mistakes creeping into his mind. The rookie quarterback threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score as the New York Jets suddenly resurgent offence set a season high for points and stopped a three-game skid with a 37-27 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. "Man, we needed that in the worst way," coach Rex Ryan said, "to say the least." Chris Ivory had a touchdown run, Nick Folk kicked three field goals and Antonio Allen blocked a punt and returned it for a score to help the Jets (6-7) avoid their first four-game losing streak under Ryan. Smith ended a miserable stretch that included getting benched last week by throwing his first touchdown toss since Week 7. He finished 16 of 25 for 219 yards, and ran five times for 50 yards -- and was able to overcome his 20th interception of the season, which led to a field goal for the Raiders. "I cant sit here and say Im not human because it is difficult," Smith said. "When you have those struggles and you come out and, the first quarter and first half, you have an interception near the 50-yard line and you kind of start to think about those things, all of those mistakes in the past." Smith got a boost on the sideline from his teammates, who urged him to hang in there and not lose his confidence. "Thats the mark of this young man," Ryan said. "Hes a resilient guy and has shown he can bounce back. It was an excellent performance on his part, and really, the team in general." Matt McGloin threw two touchdown passes and fullback Marcel Reece, starting because Oakland was down three injured running backs, had a 63-yard touchdown run for the Raiders (4-9). Oakland has lost three straight overall, and 13 in a row in games played in the Eastern time zone. "Today is as bad as we played this whole season," Raiders safety Charles Woodson said. "It was really embarrassing to be part of it. We looked like the Bad News Bears out there." With the Jets leading 3-0 after Folks 41-yard field goal, Smith was picked off by Kevin Burnett. The sparse crowd at MetLife Stadium booed loudly, but Sebastian Janikowski missed a 52-yard field goal. Despite Smiths turnover, offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg went right back to the pass on the next drive. Smith lofted a throw that a leaping Jeremy Kerley came down with for a 25-yard touchdown and a 10-0 lead. "I just went up and got it," said Kerley, playing for the first time since dislocating his left elbow on Nov. 3. "It felt like backyard football." It was Smiths first TD pass since Oct. 20 against New England and his second in eight games. It was also New Yorks first touchdown of any kind in nine quarters. Terrelle Pryor came in at quarterback on Oaklands third offensive series to help offset the Raiders lack of running backs with Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings and Jeremy Stewart all inactive with injuries. He led a drive capped by a 41-yard field goal by Janikowski. Then McGloin returned and, on third-and-9 from the 3, Ed Reed got his 62nd career interception and first with the Jets. Folk later made a 23-yard field goal. Allen blocked Marquette Kings punt, recovered it and returned it for a touchdown to put New York ahead 20-3 in the second quarter. Oakland got on the scoreboard right away in the second half as Reece zipped up the middle for a 63-yard touchdown. He finished with 123 yards on 19 carries. But the Jets came right back as Smith ran for an 8-yard score, his fourth of the season. McGloin connected with Rod Streater on a 48-yard touchdown pass on a ball threaded between Reed and Antonio Cromartie, who smacked into each other. The Jets said Cromartie has a head injury, but he finished the game. Ivory blasted into the end zone from 15 yards, slipping out of three tackle attempts and dragging a fourth Raiders defender over the goal line for a 37-20 lead. The play was set up by Smiths 32-yard scramble. McGloin, 18 of 31 for 245 yards, connected with Mychal Rivera on a 1-yard touchdown with 2:24 remaining. "Were out of lifelines," Jets guard Willie Colon said. "We have to execute and have to get it done, and today was the first step." NOTES: With 2,475 yards passing, Smith passed Mark Sanchez (2,444 in 2009) for the most by a rookie in franchise history. ... Raiders coach Dennis Allen said TE Nick Kasa and DT Vance Walker suffered concussions, and LB Sio Moore had a neck injury, but he returned.

TORONTO -- Paul Henderson still cant explain it, even 40 years later. Sitting on the bench with time winding down in the eighth and final game of the 72 Summit Series, Henderson abruptly stood up and yelled at Pete Mahovlich to come off. "I felt I had to get on the ice," Henderson recalled recently. "A tie was no good, they were going to claim victory because they had scored more goals than we did. I really wish I had an answer, but I dont. I just felt I had to get out there, I felt I could score a goal." He was right, of course. Henderson fired a rebound past Russias Vladislav Tretiak to give Canada a series-clinching 6-5 victory at Moscows Luzhniki Ice Palace. Exactly 40 years to the day after that iconic goal, the 69-year-old Henderson and the remaining members of the Canadian squad will cap a month of celebrations with a gala dinner Friday night. "Thank goodness Peter thought it was a coach yelling at him and came over the boards and I jumped over," Henderson said. "(Yvon) Cournoyer had the far point, I yelled at him and he threw it across but it was a little too far ahead of me and the defenceman tripped me. "I remember saying, We still have enough time . . . But before I knew it Phil (Esposito) had whacked it at Tretiak and I got the rebound and shot it once. Tretiak stopped it and then I got the rebound and jumped in the air and weve been celebrating now 40 years." Henderson, who has been battling cancer since 2010, was one of Canadas top players in the Summit Series, registering 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in eight games. But his deciding goal remains one of the biggest and most memorable in Canadian hockey history, a fact he didnt really appreciate until watching Sidney Crosbys winning goal for Canada at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. "I think one of the things we dont do well as Canadians is celebrate a lot of times, but especially with hockey," Henderson said. "When Crosby scored, man, I was jumping up and down and so I understand what Canadians were doing when I scored." But Henderson wouldnt have scored if not for Esposito, the heart and soul of the 72 team who fired the first shot at Tretiak. "I was at the faceoff dot to the right of Tretiak," Esposito said. "(Russian defencemen Yuri) Liapkin and (Valeri) Vasiliev screwed up and the puck squirted and I was skating backwards to go back and I just shot it at the nnet.
Tom Starke Bayern Munich Jersey. "Like nine out of 10 times I hit the net, I very seldom missed the net when I had an opportunity to hit it . . . and Tretiak, for some unexplained reason, pushed the rebound straight out and Paul, who had fallen behind the net, got up and came out because they must have lost him, just came out and put the rebound in." And while Canada celebrated, Hendersons immediate thoughts turned to his late father. "My father died in 1968 and he really wanted me to be a hockey player," Henderson said. "I never thought of him the whole series, I was far closer to my mother than I was my father. "But when the puck went across the line I said out loud, Dad wouldve loved this one, and there was that touch of melancholy. I think its that father-son connection maybe. It only lasted for a nano-second and then I just jumped into Cournoyers arms. Amazing, isnt it?" Theres also a sense of irony that the first player Henderson, a Toronto Maple Leaf, celebrated with was Cournoyer, a Montreal Canadien. "I couldve kissed him at that point," Henderson said with a chuckle. Goaltender Ken Dryden, another Montreal Canadien, skated the length of the ice to celebrate Hendersons goal with his teammates before the reality of the situation set in. "I have no recollection except I do remember the celebration of it," Dryden said. "I remember clunking down the ice and being in that pile of celebration and then thinking, Ive got to get hold of myself, theres still 34 seconds to go, get a grip." Hendersons heroics werent limited to Game 8. He also scored the winning goals in the sixth and seventh games the Canadians also had to win after falling behind 3-1-1 in the eight-game series. "Its meaningful to get the last one but when you get three in a row, I mean I was lucky thats for sure, but it was a wonderful experience," Henderson said. "The neat thing for me is I wasnt an all-star, a Hall of Famer at that point but it was really neat to prove I could play at that level and play very well." Hollywood couldnt have written it better, Henderson said. "Im 69 and I cant think of anybody who has lived a better life than I have, even with cancer," he said. "I wouldnt change places with anybody. Canadians celebrate this, I get it every day and I think it was a meaningful time for Canadians who were alive and can remember at that point." ' ' '
