PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies kept their aces and added another starter. A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday that right-hander Roberto Hernandez and Phillies agreed to a one-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an agreement has not been completed and the player must pass a physical. The 33-year-old Hernandez was formerly known as Fausto Carmona. He was arrested in January 2012 on charges of falsifying his identity that were later dropped. Major League Baseball suspended him for three weeks. Last year, he was 6-13 with a 4.89 ERA for Tampa Bay, and he is 59-82 with a 4.67 ERA over eight seasons overall, seven with the Cleveland Indians. Hernandez gives the Phillies depth on their staff. He is expected to compete for one of two spots in their rotation. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. made the move on the final day of baseballs winter meetings. The Phillies also selected right-hander Kevin Munson from Arizona in the Rule 5 draft. Among the top rumours earlier in the week were reports that Amaro was shopping Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels along with closer Jonathan Papelbon and All-Star outfielder Domonic Brown. Amaro and manager Ryne Sandberg shot down reports that Lee and Hamels were available. The Phillies are looking to rebound from their first losing season in 11 years and hope to make another post-season run. They signed veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and re-signed catcher Carlos Ruiz. Both moves are indicative of a team thats trying to contend, not rebuild. Adding Hernandez also fits in that category. Hernandez has his best season with the Indians was in 2007 when he was 19-8 with a 3.06 ERA and finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting. He was 13-14 with a 3.77 ERA in 2010 and made the All-Star team. Lee, Hamels and Kyle Kendrick fill Philadelphias top three spots in the rotation. If he had any interest in playing for the Caps, Camilo would likely have been sitting down with the club this week to negotiate another new contract – his second renegotiation in three years – ahead of joining the team for preseason. Instead, he chose to pull on another teams jersey and force his way out of Vancouver. He got what he wanted, and now a dangerous precedent has been set within Major League Soccer for any other players wanting to do a Camilo. Theres little doubt it will happen, unless the situation is quickly addressed by MLS headquarters. The leagues relative silence through the whole issue was disappointing. Transparency, or lack of it, has been a key theme in recent times in MLS. Commissioner Don Garber talks of the need to improve the situation, but both the Camilo saga and the handling of the Andre Lewis situation has shown there is still much work to be done. As for the Whitecaps, they will open preseason training camp with many holes still to fill in their squad. Following Camilos departure they should now have the resources available to ensure they have the players in place in plenty of time ahead of the season opener against New York Red Bulls on March 8 (live on TSN). "Over the last few weeks weve had a lot to deal with, but weve been working hard in the background," said Robinson. "Ive identified new players and hopefully over the next few days and weeks there will be a lot of players coming in.
