EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos can lock up a home playoff date Friday by knocking off the Saskatchewan Roughriders -- but they know its a contest that will be won in the first quarter. Take the game to the Riders from the opening whistle and its likely game over. Let them hang around and they may decide to fight hard to win one last time for their beloved retiring coach, Ken Miller. You can see the game on TSN, TSN.ca, and TSN Mobile TV beginning at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt, and you can chat with your fellow fans on our Game Night blog. "Its imperative we come out with a good start and jump on these guys early," Eskimo linebacker Rod Davis said after practice Thursday. "I have been in that situation once, and we know that those guys bags are packed. They dont really want to play. Theyre thinking about being healthy and going off home." On paper the final game of the regular season at Commonwealth Stadium is a ridiculous mismatch. The 10-7 Eskimos can take first place and a first round playoff bye with a win and a Montreal victory over the B.C. Lions on Saturday. Saskatchewan is 5-12 and out of the playoffs. They have a slew of injuries to key players like quarterback Darian Durant, linebacker Barrin Simpson and receiver Andy Fantuz. Theyre 0-9 against the West Division and havent completed a pass for touchdown in six and a half games. Edmonton has the leagues stingiest defence (22 points a game), versus Saskatchewans leagues worst offence (19 points per contest). In the previous two games, Edmonton beat up on Saskatchewan by combined score of 59-29. The Eskimos biggest concern is themselves. Theyre a young team that has turned over half the roster from last seasons non-playoff finish. Theyre also a team that got the yips last week when it had a chance to lock up first place with a win over the Lions. Instead, they missed tackles, blew assignments and found themselves in a first quarter 14-point hole they couldnt dig out of. Battering ram running back Jerome Messam ran up just 17 yards on nine carries. They lost 29-22 to set up a three-way tie in the West with B.C. and the Calgary Stampeders. Quarterback Ricky Ray said theres no such thing as a good loss, but it was better to get the nerves out of the way early. "Sometimes getting a loss out of the way helps you get refocused and heading in the right direction," said Ray. "Were a pretty loose team generally. Thats what you want to see from week to week. But when it gets to game time, weve still got to have that looseness. We cant all of a sudden get tight. "Guys are starting to understand you just go out there and do your thing." Messam said they must establish the run game early, put the Riders defence on its heels and maybe sap its will to compete. "Those guys are going to be playing hard for their coach. They want to send him off with a win. Its going to be big for us to come out and shut the door early," said Messam. Messam has a personal goal to shoot for as well. He sits third overall in the CFL with 981 yards and six touchdowns and is just 19 yards short of 1,000 for the year. The Eskimos havent hosted a home playoff game since 2004 and havent been the home team for the Western final since 2003. The Riders are playing for pride and for Miller, who led the team to the Grey Cup as head coach in 2009 and 2010 -- losing both times -- and has already announced he is retiring after Fridays game. He started the year as vice-president of football operations but returned to the sideline in August after coach Greg Marshall was fired following a 1-7 start. Notes: Edmonton offensive lineman Greg Wojt is out for Friday after reinjuring his ankle against B.C. ... Defensive end Greg Peach is a game-time decision. jerseys from china . Consensus among Canadian players is that they enter Tuesdays first-place showdown with the Americans as the clear underdogs following a shootout loss to the Czech Republic on Saturday and a white-knuckle, come-from-behind win against Slovakia on Monday. England and defending champion Spain qualified for the World Cup on Tuesday night along with Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which earned its first berth as an independent nation. The Spanish, who have won three straight major tournaments, including the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, qualified for their 10th straight World Cup. "It may look practically routine, but its important to remember how successful weve been at qualifying," coach Vicente Del Bosque said. "This is not an easy competition." France (5-1-2) was second and will be in the playoffs despite defeating visiting Finland 3-0 on goals by Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema around Joona Toivios own goal. Cristiano Ronaldos Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, Romania and Iceland also finished second in their groups, winding up in Mondays draw for the eight-team European playoffs next month along with Sweden and Croatia. The four playoff winners also will earn berths. With a population of just over 300,000, Iceland would be the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup. Trinidad and Tobago, at about 1.3 million, was at the 2006 tournament in Germany. The seedings for the playoffs will be determined by Thursdays FIFA rankings. Denmark (4-2-4) had the poorest record among the nine second-place teams and missed out on a playoff berth. Bosnia (8-1-1) won 1-0 at Lithuania on Vedad Ibisevics 68th-minute goal to win Group G on goal difference over Greece. Bosnia-Herzegovina gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1992. Former Real Salt Lake forward Yura Movsisyan scored in the fourth minute for the visitors. Alessandro Florenzi and Mario Balotelli scored for the Azzurri, and Giueseppe Rossi entered in the 73rd minute for his first international appearance since Oct. 7, 2011. A 26-year-old forward who was born and lives in New Jersey, Rossi had been sidelined until last May by a knee injury late that October, which required three operations. After clinching last week, Germany rallied for a 5-3 win at Sweden as Andre Schuerrle had a second-half hat trick following goals by Mesut Ozil and Mario Goetze. A 2-1 win by Chile (9-6-1) over visiting Ecuador (7-5-4) earned both nations berths. Alexis Sanchez scored for Chile in the 35th minute and Gary Medel added another three minutes later, while Felipe Caicedo scored for Ecuador in the 66th. Uruguay (7-5-4) was fifth on goal difference after a 3-2 win at home over already qualified Argentina (9-2-5) and will play a home-and-home playoff against Jordan, the fifth-place team in Asia. Cristian Rodriguez and Edison Cavani scored around a Luis Suarez penalty kick for the hosts, and Maxi Rodriguez had two goals for the visitors. In CONCACAF, Honduras (4-3-3) earned the regions third berth and its second straight World Cup trip with a 2-2 tie at Jamaica on goals by Carlo Costly and Maynor Figueroa. Mexico (2-3-5), in danger of failing to reach the tournament for the first time since 1990, lost 2-1 at Costa Rica as Brian Ruiz scored in the first half and Alvaro Saborio in the second for the Ticos. Oribe Peralta scored in the 29th minute for Mexico.
