The 2011 NHL Awards will take place tonight for the third straight season in Las Vegas, honouring the best individual accomplishments from a season that saw the Boston Bruins hoist the Stanley Cup after a hard fought seven-game series with the Vancouver Canucks. Here is a look at the nominees. Hart Trophy Nominees (most valuable player to his team): Corey Perry, Anaheim Ducks; Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks; Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning. Perry finished the season strong, tallying 19 times in the last 16 games to give him 50 goals on the season. Sedin was the leagues leading point getter and the only player to top the century mark. St. Louis, the only previous winner in the field, finished second to Sedin in points with 99 on the season. Ted Lindsay Award Nominees (outstanding player as voted by his peers): Perry; Sedin; Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning. The only player in this field that isnt in the running for the Hart trophy is Stamkos who replaces his teammate St. Louis for this award voted by the players. The 21-year-old Lightning forward was second to Perry this season scoring 45 goals while also finishing in the top five in points. Vezina Trophy Nominees (outstanding goaltender): Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks; Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators; Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins Luongo started 60 games and won 38 of them for the Presidents Trophy winning Canucks. His goals against average of 2.11 was the second best in the league. The man who finished ahead of him in that category is 2009 Vezina winner Thomas, who posted a stellar 2.00 GAA. Thomas also achieved an NHL record .938 save percentage. Rinne led the Predators into the playoffs and trailed only Thomas and Luongo in goals against average with a 2.12. Norris Trophy Nominees (outstanding all-around defenceman): Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins; Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings; Shea Weber, Nashville Predators. Chara led the league with a plus-33 rating and also accounted 14 goals and 44 points on the season. Lidstrom was the leading scorer among the nominees with 62 points, placing him second in the league for defencemen. Weber finished with 48 points and a plus-seven rating. All three players combined their offensive skills with tough defensive play. Calder Trophy Nominees (outstanding rookie): Logan Couture, San Jose Sharks; Michael Grabner, N.Y. Islanders; Jeff Skinner, Carolina Hurricanes Couture finished the season second in both goals and points among first year players. Grabner led all rookies with 34 goals. Skinner led the group in points and was also the only player to top the 60 mark on the season, he finished with 63 points. Jack Adams Nominees (outstanding coach): Dan Bylsma Pittsburgh Penguins; Barry Trotz, Nashville Predators; Alain Vigneault, Vancouver Canucks. Without Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal in the lineup for large portions of the season, Bylsma still managed to coach the Penguins to 106 points. Vigneault didnt have to fight through as many high profile injuries but led the Vancouver Canucks to capturing the Presidents trophy 10 points clear of the next closest team. Barry Trotz Nashville Predators were the surprise team of the season, finishing tied for fourth in the West with 99 points. Selke Trophy Nominees (top defensive forward): Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings; Ryan Kesler, Vancouver Canucks; Jonathan Toews Chicago Blackhawks. Pavel Datsyuk is the three-time defending champion for this award and numbers are once again worthy of being honoured. Datsyuk finished the season with 62 points to go along with his strong defensive zone play and penalty killing. Kesler emerged this season as a premiere defensive forward used to shut out opponents top lines, he also finished with 73 points and an impressive plus-24 rating. Toews captained the vastly different defending champion Chicago Blackhawks into the playoffs with 76 points, a plus-25 rating and 10 power-play goals. Lady Byng Nominees (most gentlemanly player): Loui Eriksson, Dallas Stars; Lidstrom; St. Louis. Eriksson took only eight minutes of penalties to combine with his 73 points season. Lidstrom had 20 minutes in penalties to go along with another strong season. St. Louis, the reigning winner in this category, led the offensive minded Lightning with 99 points as well as only racking up 12 minutes in penalties. Boyce was a real presence killing penalties against the Lightning, notably the shot he blocked from Steven Stamkos with the Leafs killing a five-on-three. "He made a couple good plays on the penalty kill," Lupul said. "It mightve even been twice that he stripped the puck from [Martin] St. Louis and just got it out of the zone which definitely isnt an easy task. You can see his aggressiveness on the PK which is something I think maybe weve been lacking at times, partially just because weve been struggling at times too. No one wants to be that guy that makes a mistake so sometimes when you bring in a new face it can really be a breath of fresh air." Sour from a disastrous month of December, the Leafs began January with a perfect five-for-five effort on the penalty kill, albeit against the NHLs worst road power play. 2. A lengthy stint in the American League and great distance between opportunities (he played his first NHL game on January 24th, 2008) has left the Summerside, P.E.I. native with a great appreciation for whats in front of him. Connolly has chipped in with three assists in two games alongside Lupul and Phil Kessel, offering a change of pace in the offensive zone from the younger Bozak. "I think Bozies really good at getting in on the forecheck and winning those battles and just moving the puck quick, but with TC, hes going to hold onto the puck a little bit more and look to make some plays," Lupul explained. "Weve had some success with both guys. Tims a little more of a veteran presence and hes really strong in his own zone as well. Theyre both very capable centreman and both have been playing great hockey for us all year." Connolly had just five points in 13 games before being reunited with Lupul and Kessel in Winnipeg on New Years Eve. 4. One aspect thats been critical to Lupul and his success (44 points): winning puck battles. The 29-year-old cites the subtle, but crucial task as one of the more fundamental improvements in his game this fall and a major factor in his evolution as a power forward. Lupul still has yet to go consecutive games without a point, hitting the scoresheet in 31 of 39 games. 5. The door has opened ever more slightly for Jonas Gustavsson, who picked up the win with 21 saves on Tuesday night. Gustavsson will make his second straight start against the Jets on Thursday. "Ive been trying to get Reims going by letting him catch up with a lot of games," Ron Wilson said, "but right now I think the Monster gives us just as good a chance to win and as long as hes winning hes going to keep playing.
