MONTREAL -- Anthony Calvillo threw touchdown passes to Brandon Whitaker and Kerry Watkins as the Montreal Alouettes clinched a home playoff game with a nervy 27-25 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday afternoon. Sean Whyte added four field goals for Montreal (10-5), which moved two points ahead of the Blue Bombers into first place in the CFLs East Division. The Alouettes will have a first-place showdown with the Bombers in Winnipeg on Saturday. The Alouettes had a 27-12 lead with less than five minutes to play, but the Ticats roared back with TDs by quarterback Kevin Glenn and slotback Dave Stala to make it a two-point game. Chip Cox knocked the ball away from Aaron Kelly on the two-point conversion attempt to preserve the win for Montreal. Justin Medlock went 4-for-6 on field goals for Hamilton (7-8). The two teams split their four meetings this season, but Montreal won the season series by outscoring the Ticats by a single point, 117-116. The Alouettes will play at least one home game in the post-season for the 14th time in 16 years since they returned to Montreal in 1996 after a 10-year hiatus. Hamilton coach Marcel Bellefeuille said he would have quarterback Kevin Glenn on a short leash and apparently he meant it, lifting his starter in favour of Quinton Porter after only one series. After Porter went 10-for-16 for 99 yards, Glenn was back to start the second half. While he moved the ball, he also was picked off twice. A key moment came midway through the fourth quarter when Chris Williams was unable to hang onto a pass into the end zone under close coverage from Seth Williams. On the next play, Cox intercepted and it produced Whytes fourth field goal of the day. Glenn bounced back by leading a TD drive he finished himself with a 15 yard scramble out of the backfield with 2:14 left in the game. When Hamilton got the ball back, he hit Kelly at the Montreal six, but was injured on the play. Porter came in for the TD pass to Stala. A cool, light rain made for messy football, with plenty of turnovers and penalties. Montreals Perry Floyd fumbled the opening kickoff and it was recovered by Ray Mariuz on the 34-yard line to set up the first field goal 2:44 into the game. The Alouettes broke through late in the half when Calvillo led an 11 play 101 yard drive capped up a 20 yard TD pass to Whitaker, who caught the ball at the sidelines, put a fake on two defenders and tip-toed 10 yards along the sideline into the end zone. It was the running backs eighth TD of the season, his sixth via the pass. Montreals first possession of the second half was a 10 play, 93 yard drive finished by Calvillos 22 yard TD pass to Watkins. On Hamiltons next play from scrimmage, Glenn was picked off by Diamond Ferri. The Ticats lost running back Terry Grant to a suspected broken ankle early in the game when Eric Wilson fell on him after a Cox tackle.
