WINNIPEG -- Tanner Glass knows Winnipeg Jets hopes for a playoff spot are hanging by a thread, and costly losses at the normally energizing MTS centre are making their slim chances fade even faster. The Jets lost 4-2 to the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers Wednesday, keeping Winnipeg (35-34-8) in 10th place in the conference with 78 points. Buffalo holds the eighth and final playoff spot with 86 points, while Washington is ninth with 84. Both clubs were idle Wednesday. "Its difficult, for sure," Glass said. "You play all year to get towards the playoffs and when you kind of squander some chances at home here, that we feel were games we needed to win to get in, its difficult. "But I dont know if were out of it yet, but we cant play like we are." Ryan Callahan and Michael Del Zotto each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers. Brian Boyle and Derek Stepan also scored, while Marian Gaborik added a pair of assists. Three of those goals were on specials teams, two on the power play and one short handed. Spencer Machacek and Bryan Little had Winnipegs goals. Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves for the Rangers, while Ondrej Pavelec stopped 24 shots in the loss. The Jets arent yet mathematically out of the playoff picture, but they will need to basically run the table and watch their rivals collapse. The Jets, Sabres and Capitals have each played 77 games. Tampa and Carolina are behind Winnipeg with 77 points each. The Jets have five games remaining, all against conference opponents. They head out for a four-game road trip, starting in Carolina on Friday, and close out the regular season at home April 7 against Tampa. Winnipegs road performance has been its weak link. It only has 12 wins away from the friendly confines of MTS Centre. But the sold-out crowds of 15,004 didnt help the Jets this week, as they also lost to Ottawa on Monday. The previous home game was a loss to Carolina, giving the Jets their first three-game losing streak at home this season. "We definitely havent been playing our best lately," said Little, whose goal was his 23rd of the season. He pointed to another case of the Jets inability to play with a lead and finish teams off. Winnipeg had all three power plays in a scoreless first period, including a two-man advantage for 1:44, and outshot the Rangers 11-4. They jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second period after Machacek fired a shot between Lundqvists pads at 3:58 and Little redirected a pass 56 seconds. But the Rangers quickly responded with a short-handed and a power-play goal. With New York centre Brandon Dubinsky in the box for slashing, Callahan took the puck behind the back of the net, spun around and sent a pass to Del Zotto in the slot, whose low shot went under Pavelec at 7:44. "I think the turning point in the game really was the short-handed goal that we gave up because they (the Rangers) didnt have a lot of life," Jets head coach Claude Noel said. "I think they got a lot of life after that, made it 2-1." New York had defeated Minnesota 3-2 on Tuesday. Callahan agreed with Noels take on the short-handed marker. "I think our penalty-kill goal kind of lifted the team up and gave us momentum, and we began to take the game over," the Rangers captain said. While Jets forward Alex Burmistrov was off for holding, Callahan scored his 28th goal of the season during a power play at 18:23 of the second. Winnipeg captain Andrew Ladd was assessed a double minor for high-sticking 29 seconds later. Just after Ladds penalty expired, Boyle notched the game-winner when he tucked the puck between the goal post and Pavelecs stick at 3:07 to make it 3-2. Stepan widened the gap 4-2 with a power-play goal at 10:06. Boyle, who had the cap knocked off a tooth by Ladds high stick, pointed to his teams character for the comeback. "Especially early in the game, theres a lot of game left to be played and we knew we had more," Boyle said. "I think it was a matter of righting the ship and figuring out what we needed to do better and then take it from there, and we did that." New York was 2-5 with the man advantage and Winnipeg 0-5. The Rangers have won all four games between the clubs this season, including two shutouts. New York, which hosts Montreal on Friday, is the only Eastern Conference team the Jets havent defeated this season. Derrick Shelby Jersey . A solution, however, was easy to find. ATLANTA -- Andrelton Simmons and the Braves havent said much about last years NL wild-card loss to the Cardinals. Beating the Cardinals in July wont make up for that playoff defeat. But Simmons said its a start. Simmons hit a two-run double in the eighth inning and the Braves, boosted by Julio Teherans sharp outing, beat the Cardinals 2-0 Saturday in a matchup of NL division leaders. The Braves have won the first two games of the first series between the teams this season. The Cardinals beat the Braves 6-3 at Turner Field in last seasons wild-card game. "Theyre a great team," said Simmons of the Cardinals. "They got us last year in a pretty big game. We owe them some. Its good to see this team beating them." Teheran allowed two hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Simmons bases-loaded, two-out double came on a 99 mph fastball from Trevor Rosenthal. With the count at 2-1, Simmons was looking for a fastball. "I know he was behind in the count and I know hes comfortable with his fastball," Simmons said. "He throws pretty hard. I was ready for it. ... I was just looking for something over the plate and he threw it somewhere I could reach it." Randy Choate (1-1) walked Freddie Freeman to open the eighth. Evan Gattis struck out and Brian McCann singled. Rosenthal relieved and struck out Dan Uggla before walking Chris Johnson to load the bases. Luis Avilan (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth and Craig Kimbrel recorded three outs to earn his 30th save. Cardinals starter Joe Kelly pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and walking three in only his fourth start of the season and first appearance since July 12. "Very, very impressive," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "It was maybe the best Ive ever seen him throw. Everything. His aggressiveness, his slider, breaking ball, changeup, all of them were as good as Ive seen. "That was exactly what we were asking for, and then some." Kelly may have earned himself another opportunity as the Cardinals No. 5 starter. "I like pitching, period," he said. "t;To be in the rotation would be awesome but I just take the ball when they tell me and take the opportunity when I get out there.dddddddddddd "Im pitching right now in the moment. I feel like my stuff is there, in the zone." Kelly matched Teheran through the sixth before finding trouble in the seventh. With one out, Simmons singled and moved to third on pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavichs soft double to the left-centre gap. Kelly issued an intentional walk to Jason Heyward to load the bases. Right-hander Michael Maness replaced Kelly and got Justin Upton to ground into an inning-ending double play. Teheran allowed a two-out double to Matt Holliday in the first and then walked Allen Craig. The right-hander permitted only one baserunner -- Jon Jay doubled in the fifth -- through the next six innings. "I think thats the best game Ive ever pitched," Teheran said. "The command I had today, I think thats the best Ive had this year." Holliday was activated off the 15-day disabled list before the game. He had been out since July 12 with a strained right hamstring. Simmons hit eighth as Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez juggled his lineup. Heyward hit leadoff for only the second game this season. Upton, normally the No. 3 hitter, batted second for the first time in 2013. Simmons had two hits. He ranks second on the team with 14 go-ahead RBIs, but said he was overdue to deliver the clutch hit. "I know Ive been struggling with runners in scoring position this year," Simmons said. "Ive been trying, but its nice to see results." NOTES: With two hits and a walk, Johnson is hitting .332 to tie the Cardinals Yadier Molina for the NL lead. Molina was 0 for 3. ... The Cardinals optioned OF-1B Brock Peterson to Triple-A Memphis to clear a roster spot for Holliday. ... Gonzalez said he is 95 per cent certain RHP Brandon Beachy, returning from elbow ligament-replacement surgery in June 2012, will come off the DL to start Monday nights game against Colorado. ... The three-game series ends Sunday night when Atlanta RHP Kris Medlen faces St. Louis rookie RHP Shelby Miller. cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '
