ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jonny Gomes had an outstanding homecoming. Gomes hit a towering homer, Mike Leake pitched six strong innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-0 on Monday night. Gomes, the former Rays outfielder playing at Tropicana Field for the first time since becoming a free agent after the 2008 season, hit a solo shot off an overhanging catwalk during a two-run fourth that made it 4-0. Brandon Phillips, who had four hits and two RBIs, added a run-scoring single off Jeremy Hellickson (7-7) later in the inning. "I really wanted to play him here against his former team," Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Gomes. "It was a good night for him and hopefully hell hit a couple more before we get out of here." Gomes has hit nine fair balls off the catwalks, the most at the St. Petersburg ballpark since it opened in 1998. Many in the announced crowd of 19,891 cheered for Gomes, a popular figure when he played for Tampa Bay from 2003-08, after his home run. "It was a good opportunity to show the Reds the guidelines on the catwalk," Gomes said with a smile. "I havent been here for a while, so I saw some familiar faces. A good opportunity to come back to the Trop." Leake (7-4) scattered four hits, walked two and had three strikeouts in ending his two-start losing streak. "I felt good, but I kind of took a little step back as far as mechanics," Leake said. "I was a little disappointed on my first-pitch strikes. But putting up zeros, you cant complain." Sam LeCure worked two innings before Nick Masset pitched the ninth to complete the six-hitter. "Our pitching is coming around big-time," Baker said. Hellickson lost his fourth consecutive start, giving up four runs and eight hits in six innings. During the right-handers skid, Tampa Bay has been outscored 20-1. The Rays were coming off a three-game sweep at Houston, where they scored 26 runs. Tampa Bay (44-35) dropped to 18-19 at home, where it has scored just 114 runs in 37 games. "That was a bad game," manager Joe Maddon said. "We just arent, offensively, playing the same game here. The answer, I dont know what it is. I honestly dont." Cincinnati went up 2-0 in the first when Phillips drove in a run with a double and Jay Bruce hit an RBI single. The Reds had lost six of nine. Bruce, who missed Sundays game with flulike symptoms, was back in the lineup and went 1-for-4. Tampa Bay ran itself out of a promising inning in the sixth. With two on and no outs, Matt Joyce hit a flyball to left that turned into double play when Evan Longoria, the baserunner at first, ran past the lead runner, Ben Zobrist, for an automatic out. Casey Kotchman then hit an inning-ending grounder. "He doesnt make too many mistakes, but that was a little gift for me," Leake said. Longoria thought left-fielder Fred Lewis was not going to run the ball down. "I was convinced it was going to get down," Longoria said. "He tracked it down and we all know what happened." Andre Ellington Cardinals Jersey . Most fans dont care who the players are; they just want to be entertained by a winning team. That mentality is understandable. After all, the goal of professional sports is to win, not produce national team players. Some respondents said they would prefer it if the team could win with Canadian players, while fewer still said they wanted to see their team field Canadian-born players at all costs.

Peterson said on Thursday that he plans to play against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday despite being only about 85 per cent healed from a sprained left ankle that has caused him to miss three straight games. He wants to be there for his teammates, who have found a new way to lose seemingly every week to fall to 2-11; for his coaches, who have been receiving plenty of criticism during this massively disappointing season; and for all the fans who are counting on him to help them in their fantasy football leagues. "Its very important, especially for my fantasy team owners," Peterson joked. "Theyve been giving me a hard time on Twitter. But just being out ... seeing my guys go out and fall short week after week and just wishing I was out there to help those guys compete." Peterson suffered the high ankle sprain against the Oakland Raiders on Nov. 20. After making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history in the off-season, the Vikings didnt want to risk their investment by rushing Peterson back in a season in which the playoffs were not an option. But Peterson never thought about taking the rest of the season off to make sure hes fully recovered. "I love this game, so no matter if we were 2-11 or whatever, if Im healthy Im going to go out and play," Peterson said. "Thats been my mindset from the beginning. Three weeks off, Im gooing to be a part of it.dddddddddddd" His teammates arent the only ones eager to see him back. Peterson said fantasy owners have pestered him every week with questions on Twitter. "Should we play you this week? Please!" Peterson said with a chuckle. "Some of the stuff I read on there is crazy." Quarterback Christian Ponders hip pointer has improved as well, so coach Leslie Frazier said the Vikings are expecting to have everyone available for the game against the Saints (10-3). Peterson will be evaluated again on Friday, but all signs are pointing to him returning to the field. "The way hes moving around, some of the things that really concerned him a week ago at this time dont seem to concern him much, nor does it concern us," Frazier said. "So if he has another good day (Friday), we should be in the clear." Frazier said the fact that Peterson still wants to play even though there is nothing left for the team to play for speaks volumes. "A superstar like him, hes going to achieve what he wants to achieve," Frazier said. "The fact that he wants to get back and play with this football team speaks very highly of who he is as a person. He wants to finish this season with his teammates." Peterson said he still feels some soreness when he cuts and plants, but not enough to prevent him from wanting to play. "Im like 85 per cent," he said. "But Ill be able to take the pain and whatever it is that comes with it."
