FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Andy Dorman and Kelyn Rowe scored in the second half to lead the New England Revolution to a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in the first leg of their Eastern Conference semifinals series on Saturday night. Dorman put the Revolution on the scoreboard in the 55th minute, while Rowe made it 2-0 in the 67th. Aurelien Collin pulled Sporting within one in the 69th. "I thought it was a hard-fought battle between two teams fighting for everything," Revolution coach Jay Heaps said. "It certainly wasnt a pretty game, but (rather) two teams pushing hard and two teams trying to get ahead in the playoffs." The Revolution, appearing in the post-season for the first time since 2009, entered the match with a 501-minute regular season goal drought against Sporting Kansas City, a streak that reaches back to the 2011 season. The Revolution spent much of the first half trying to find their rhythm and ending the streak. "We played with a lot of discipline, and we were very well organized," Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen said. "We forced their back four to play the long balls up to the striker, our centre backs won the ball, and our midfielders were good on the second balls. The Revolution had to survive an early scare before they were able to step on the gas. In the 18th minute, Graham Zusis corner kick found Chance Myers, who headed the ball toward the goal before Lee Nguyen cleared it off the line. "Some games, we put two players on the post and sometimes, we put one player on the post," Heaps said. "But tonight, we made the right call and put two players on the post." After a first half filled with erratic play from both teams, the Revolution were able to break through early in the second half. Diego Fagundez blasted a shot that was initially saved by Nielsen before the rebound fell to Juan Agudelo. The Revolution striker was able to direct on frame and Dorman tapped it through. Rowe made it a two-goal advantage 12 minutes later when Nguyen slid it toward him and his touch redirected it into the back of the net. Sporting struck back two minutes later. Amid a chaotic fight for the ball inside the Revolution box, Collin was able to steer C.J. Sapongs ball into the net. "I think we showed how strong this team is to come back, and that goal gave us a good life line," Nielsen said. The clubs will play the second leg of the series on Wednesday at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. "So it was just getting the playbook down and being comfortable in the offence and everything pretty much came together." Through 11 games, McDaniel has 37 catches for 539 yards. He broke into the CFL in 09 with Hamilton, registering 57 catches for 688 yards and three TDs. McDaniel had 76 receptions for 994 yards and seven TDs the following season. But the six-foot, 200-pound receiver only played one game for Hamilton in 2011, recording four catches for 60 yards. Shortly after being released Aug. 31, the native of Virginia Beach, Va., signed with Calgary and spent the remainder of the season on the practice roster. McDaniel credited Calgarys offensive line coach Mike Gibson, a former Ticats offensive co-ordinator, with putting in a good word for him with the Stamps after McDaniel was released. "You never know whats going to happen," McDaniel said. "I said before, that could have been it for me but I guess coach Gibson and people over here wanted to bring me in and see me. "I guess I did a good job on the practice squad and they told me just come in ready for camp and theyll give me a fair shot and thats what they did." Receivers coach Pete Costanza said McDaniel followed up a solid training camp with consistent play early in the regular season. "Hes a smart guy, understands our system and hes just been making plays," Costanza said. "You watch the way hes playing out there and hes blocking, running good routes and making timely plays. "Hes just having a solid season, but its really his preparation and his understanding of the offence now thats helped him get there.dddddddddddd" Calgary quarterback Kevin Glenn, who had success throwing passes to McDaniel in Hamilton in 2009 and 2010, isnt surprised that McDaniel has bounced back. "I played with him, so I know what kind of guy he is, what kind of athlete he is," Glenn said. "Hes smart, he understands football. He takes coaching. Hes doing a good job for us. "Its just one of those things. Sometimes it doesnt work in one situation and you have to move on to the next." And McDaniel has certainly taken advantage of his latest opportunity. "Its great," he said. "Everything about playing in real games and going on the road, I missed it. "Its a good group of guys here. I love going out and practising, I love going to battle with these guys every week. Theres no feeling like actually being out there on that field." McDaniel has yet to register a receiving TD this season but remains undeterred. "As long as were winning and were going in the right direction everything else will come," McDaniel said. "My thing is to try to make plays when the ball comes to me so the coaches will be more comfortable giving me more touches." Costanza, for one, isnt concerned about McDaniels touchdown drought. "He will when he gets a chance," Costanza said. "They all know that when youve got a chance to make a play youve got to make it but theres only football and five guys catching it. Whoever scores a touchdown in our group were happy. Eventually hell get in and hell be happy. "He just knows that at the end of the day the main goal is trying to win. Whatever he can do to help us win, he does, and thats why its a joy to coach him." After appearing in just one game with Hamilton last year, McDaniel is thankful to just be playing football again. "Im just grateful," he said. "Its been a long journey. Coming back you still didnt know exactly what was going to happen.
