Sunday afternoon’s best and worst NFL performances

After Peyton Mannings seven touchdown explosion Thursday night, fans tuning into the NFL Red Zone Channel during Sundays early games were treated to.three safeties? Before the first quarter was halfway through in Pittsburgh, Jacksonville and East Rutherford, the Steelers, Jaguars and Jets had all posted 2-0 leads on the scoreboard. Only the Jets would score again.

The uncharacteristic beginning (only 13 safeties were scored in the entire 2012 NFL season) gave way to more normalized scoring performances as the day went on, although some of the names behind them were certainly unexpected.

Here are the most attention-grabbing efforts from Sunday afternoon’s action.

The Good:?Geno Smith, E.J. Manuel and Terrelle Pryor

Perhaps its the benefit of low expectations, but the two rookies and the new Raiders starter all made strides in their season openers, with Smiths late scramble drawing the penalty that led to the Jets’ game-winning field goal. Neither Manuel or Pryor came away with a win but both kept their teams in games until the final minute.

The Tampa Bay linebackers dumb late hit penalty on Smith with just two seconds left in the game put the Jets in range to kick a game-winning 48-yard field goal, which they improbably did, beating the Bucs 18-17.

The Good:?Reggie Bush

(GIF via gifdsports.com)The Lions signed the veteran free agent to be a difference maker as both a runner and pass catcher and he certainly made general manager Martin Mayhew look savvy with his performance versus the Vikings. Bush had 90 yards rushing and 101 yards receiving, most of which occurred on a 77-yard touchdown catch as the Lions won 34-24.

The Good:?Anquan Boldin

The veteran receiver grabbed 13 catches for 208 yards and a touchdown in his 49ers debut as San Francisco beat the Packers 34-28.

The Bad:?Pittsburgh Steelers

The team lost Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey to a serious knee injury after he was run into by his own linemate and rushed for 32 total yards in a dreadful 16-9 loss to the Titans. Pittsburghs last losing season was their 6-10 campaign in 2003. They may be due for another one Cheap Kobe 9.

The Good:?Dan Williams

Who says defensive linemen cant catch? The 327-pound Cardinals nose tackle snagged a deflected Sam Bradford pass and returned it two yards for an interception return in Arizonas 27-24 loss to the Rams.

The Bad:?Jacksonville JaguarsIn a battle of 2-14 teams from last season, the Jags appear destined for more of the same after a 28-2 drubbing by the Chiefs. QB Blaine Gabbert was sacked six times before leaving with an injured hand.
