Michael Carrick has said he welcomes the competition for his place provided by Manchester United’s new signing Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgian joined the Premier League champions for £27.5 million on Monday evening as United manager David Moyes ended his long search for a central midfielder.

Carrick was an automatic choice in that department for United last season, starting 34 league games and being voted a member of the PFA Team of the Year, but he believes his spot in the side is not guaranteed with Fellaini’s arrival.

Nonetheless, he is pleased the Belgian, who has become the fifth most expensive player in United’s history, has joined predator lz football boots 2013.

"It's something I welcome," he said at a press conference while on international duty, as England prepare for Friday’s game against Moldova.

"The more top-quality players you have in your squad, whether it's in my position or not, the better it is for the team. It's not a case of me thinking, 'I might not be in the team'. I will still have to play well to be in it regardless."

Carrick also insisted that his United and England team-mate Wayne Rooney would have played for his country this week if it was possible.

Rooney suffered a bad gash to his forehead when he was caught by Phil Jones’ boot in training, leading to Moyes predicting he will be out for three weeks, and the striker posted an image on Facebook to show the severity of the wound.
