1918 World Series, a milestone that for decades reminded Boston fans of the franchises failure but now stands as a landmark only for Chicago as it see  发帖心情 Post By:2014-12-19 13:27:26

TAMPA, Fla. -- Greg Schiano glanced to his left where the three newest members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were seated and smiled broadly. All-Pro guard Carl Nicks, two-time Pro Bowl receiver Vincent Jackson and well-regarded cornerback Eric Wright comprise the biggest one-day free agent haul in franchise history and figure to play key roles in whether the first-year coach makes a successful transition from Rutgers to the NFL. "I think theyre a perfect fit ... for what we want to do," Schiano said. Schiano noted that Nicks is a punishing blocker who will help the running game, Jackson is a proven deep threat wholl make the passing attack better and Wright is a much-needed addition for a defence that must improve if the Bucs are to rebound from a 4-12 finish that included 10 consecutive losses to end last season. Barely 14 hours after making a splash by signing Jackson to a five-year $55.55 million contract Tuesday, general manager Mark Dominik closed five-year deals Wednesday with Nicks, one of the key blockers for Drew Brees on the Saints record-setting offence, and Wright, whos coming off a solid season with the Lions. Later Wednesday, the Bucs released veteran centre Jeff Faine, who had two seasons remaining on a six-year, $37.5 million contract he signed as a free agent in 2008. In a statement released by the team, the Orlando native thanked the Bucs for giving him an opportunity to play close to home. "The move is bittersweet, but I leave in good health, excited and energized for my next opportunity," Faine said. Nicks received a $47.5 million deal that the four-year veteran called "humbling." Wright, who matched his career high with four interceptions for Detroit last season, got a $37.5 million package -- meaning Dominik negotiated deals totalling more than $140 million in one day after not spending much at all on other teams free agents the past two years. And it appears the spending spree -- the Bucs entered free agency more than $42 million under the league salary cap -- is done. "Our eyes are turned toward the draft," where Tampa Bay has the fifth overall pick and will seek to address other needs, Dominik said. "Weve made our mark," the general manager added, "for what we wanted to accomplish." Jackson gives the Bucs the legitimate No. 1 pass catcher theyve lacked since Keyshawn Johnson helped Tampa Bay win its only Super Bowl title 10 years ago. The three-time 1,000-yard receiver had 37 TD receptions in seven seasons with the Chargers and provides a deep threat for young quarterback Josh Freeman. Jacksons contract, which will pay the receiver $13 million in each of his first two seasons in Tampa Bay, was done in all 5s in honour of Freeman, who wears jersey No. 5. The 29-year-old was excited to be available after earning nearly $11 million in 2011, when San Diego put franchise tag on him. He missed most of 2010 in a salary dispute. Like Nicks and Wright, Jackson said money was the only lure to Tampa Bay. Each of them like the nucleus of young talent the Bucs have assembled since deciding to rebuild with youth after the 2008 season. Former coach Raheem Morris led the team to a surprising 10-6 record, narrowly missing the playoffs two years ago. The team took a step backward last season, when Freeman threw 22 interceptions (compared to just six in 2010) and Tampa Bays defence set a franchise record for most points allowed. "They have the tools here to do big things," Jackson said. "Im just looking to do my part." Nicks made the Pro Bowl in New Orleans that past two seasons and is considered one of the best pass blockers in the NFL. Hes also excited that Schianos blueprint for success revolves around what the coach hopes will be a productive running game thatll take some of the pressure off Freeman. The Saints led the NFL in total offence and threw for more yards than any club in league history last season. No disrespect for what his old team approach, but he is looking forward to opening holes for the run-oriented attack that Schiano expects to open things up for Freeman and the passing game. "We were pass first, pass second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth," Nicks said, adding that it will be "interesting" facing his old team twice a year in the NFC South. Wright, a five-year veteran, was with the Lions last season after spending four years in Cleveland. With Ronde Barbers future with the Bucs up in the air after 15 seasons and Aqib Talib confronting a legal matter off the field, the Bucs felt it was essential to pursue a proven cornerback in free agency. Jackson, who during last years lockout was one of 10 named plaintiffs in the Brady V. NFL antitrust suit filed against club owners, said he doesnt anticipate the size of his contract creating pressure for him to be anyone other than the same type of player that made him one of the most attractive players available in free agency. Nicks and Wright expect to blend in well, too, although they know all eyes will be on them and Jackson. "Were not the big three like the Miami Heat," Nicks said, smiling. Returning to Boston to play the Red Sox for the first time since the 1918 World Series, the Cubs committed four errors and gave up 19 hits in a 15-5 Red Sox victory. If Cubs pitchers had forgotten in all that time how close the left-field wall is, they know now after Boston had six doubles and hit two home runs over Fenways famous Green Monster. "All those flyballs," said Cubs left-fielder Alfonso Soriano, who misplayed a line drive into an error. "A routine flyball can go off the wall. Were professionals. We need to make adjustments and play the wall." Adrian Gonzalez had four hits with four RBIs, Kevin Youkilis had two doubles and a two-run homer and Jacoby Ellsbury also had three hits as Boston won its seventh consecutive game. The Red Sox are 22-10 since losing 10 of their first 12 games; they have passed the New York Yankees for the first time this season, and now trail the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays by just a half-game. "Thats where we want to be," said Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who had two hits, including a homer. "We know weve got a great team. Theres no reason why we shouldnt be in first place right now. We want to be in first place and stay in first place the whole year." Jon Lester (6-1) won his sixth straight decision despite giving up a career-high 12 hits. He allowed five runs, two walks and a hit batter, striking out five. Scott Atchison earned his first career save with three innings of scoreless relief. Jeff Baker had four hits and Aramis Ramirez three for Chicago, which was coming off a two-game sweep of the Florida Marlins. Doug Davis (0-2) gave up seven runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out three in 3 2-3 innings. It was the Cubs first visit to Fenway Park since the 1918 World Series, a milestone that for decades reminded Boston fans of the franchises failure but now stands as a landmark only for Chicago as it seeks its first championship since 1908. "(This) put an end to my enthusiasm for this momentous occasion," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "Theyre tough. I feel really good about us offensively and were doing a goood job against left-handed starters.ddddddddddddBut, four errors isnt going to get it done." Cubs fans made their presence known in the sellout crowd of 37,140, outcheering the locals at times. There was even an appearance of the Blues Brothers in the stands. But the Chicago players did not adapt well to their new surroundings, committing four errors plus a dropped flyball by right fielder Reed Johnson that was changed to a double. The Red Sox scored two in the first, one of them on a throwing error by catcher Koyie Hill when he tried to catch Ellsbury stealing third. The Cubs tied it 2-2 in the third, but Boston scored two more in the bottom half and then made it 8-2 with four more runs in the fourth. After Gonzalezs two-run single chased Davis, Scott Maine came in and gave up a two-run homer to Youkilis. The Cubs cut it to 8-5 in the fifth, scoring two on a double by Johnson. Saltalamacchia led off the bottom half with a homer and Boston added another run to make it 10-5, then scored two more in the eighth. The Red Sox won the 1918 Series in six games, with just 15,238 fans settling into Fenway to watch the clincher. (The Chicago History Museum recently published a document indicating that Cubs players might have been paid to throw the Series.) Babe Ruth, who won two games in the series, entered the final game as a defensive replacement in left field. Just two months later, World War I ended. With two titles in this century, the Red Sox have left their futility behind. But the Cubs are still looking for their first championship in more than a century. NOTES: The Red Sox activated RHP Dan Wheeler from the 15-day disabled list and selected INF Drew Sutton from their triple-A roster. To make room for them in Boston, the ballclub optioned RHP Michael Bowden and SS Jose Iglesias to Pawtucket. To make room for Sutton on the 40-man roster, the club designated OF Daniel Nava for assignment. The Red Sox also added LHP Franklin Morales to the active roster. ... Dennis Eckersley threw out the first pitch to Carlton Fisk. Bill Buckner was also in the ballpark, to provide analysis for the Chicago TV broadcast. ... Youkilis two-run homer gave him 500 career RBIs. ... Soriano turned Saltalamacchias seventh-inning single into two bases when he charged it and ran right past it. cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '
