ATLANTA -- Brooks Conrad hasnt lost his knack for delivering in the clutch as a pinch-hitter. Conrad drove in the winning run in the ninth inning with a pinch-hit single to give the Atlanta Braves a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Conrad, who had three homers -- including two grand slams -- and drove in 12 runs as a pinch-hitter last season, singled home Alex Gonzalez from second base. Gonzalez, who had a two-run homer in the fifth, opened the ninth with a pop fly off Franklin (0-3) that bounced off shortstop Ryan Theriots glove for an error. Gonzalez moved to second on Joe Mathers sacrifice before Franklin walked Nate McLouth. Conrad hit a fastball from Franklin into shallow centre field to drive in Gonzalez. He was mobbed by teammates near first base after the game-winning hit. "Its the best feeling," Conrad said. "Anytime you can get a base hit like that, it feels really good. Walk-off hits like that are few." Injuries to Martin Prado and Chipper Jones forced Conrad into the starting lineup at second base late last season, but he committed four errors in the first three games of the Braves NL division series loss to San Francisco. The Braves stuck with Conrad as a utility infielder this year, and he provided a reward against the Cardinals. The Cardinals lost third baseman David Freese, who suffered a broken bone in his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Scott Linebrink in the sixth inning. X-rays at the stadium showed the broken bone. The Cardinals did not say how long Freese is expected to be out. "Its a bone on top of another bone type of deal," Freese said, adding he will see a doctor in St. Louis on Monday. "Ill see what they say. Maybe Ill need surgery just to speed up the process." Jonny Venters (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth. Derek Lowe gave up six hits and four runs in five innings three days after his DUI arrest. Lowe was charged with DUI, reckless driving and improper lane change on Thursday night after he was spotted by a Georgia State Patrol trooper racing another car down an Atlanta street. Lowe wouldnt answer questions about the DUI after the game. He abruptly ended an interview session when asked a third question about the arrest. Lowe was shaky in the first inning, giving up three runs on four hits. "It just wasnt a good start," Lowe said. "We found a way to keep it close." The Cardinals, who had comebacks to win the first two games of the series, couldnt hold a 4-0 lead. Matt Holliday had a two-run double in the first. Lance Berkman and Albert Pujols added run-scoring singles. Atlantas Dan Uggla knocked Jaime Garcia out of the game in the seventh with a drive off the top of the centre-field wall. Uggla thought he hit a homer, but the umpires ruled the hit was a double. They confirmed the ruling with a quick video review. Gonzalez followed with a grounder to first that Pujols mishandled for an error, allowing Uggla to score for a 4-4 tie. Martin Prados single off Jason Motte drove in Mather to give Atlanta the 5-4 lead. Holliday led off the eighth with his second double of the game and scored on Yadier Molinas fly ball to right field off Cory Gearrin. Garcia gave up five hits and four runs in six-plus innings. Nick Punto and Colby Rasmus reached on singles and scored on Hollidays double to left in the first. Berkman added a run-scoring single to centre. Lowe settled down with three strong innings before the Cardinals pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Pujols drove in Garcia with a single up the middle. After Garcia threw four perfect innings to open the game, the Braves broke through in the fifth when Brian McCann singled and scored on the homer by Gonzalez. Mather walked, moved to third on McLouths broken-bat single and scored on pinch-hitter Brandon Hicks single to left. The Cardinals couldnt score after loading the bases against Scott Linebrink with no outs in the sixth. Berkman, who led off the inning with a single, was thrown out at the plate on Theriots grounder to third baseman Chipper Jones. Brian McCann threw to first to complete the double play, and George Sherrill struck out Garcia to end the inning. Pujols moved from first base to third base in the eighth. It was his first appearance at third base since Sept. 23, 2002 against Arizona. Mark Hamilton entered the game at first base in a double-switch as manager Tony La Russa brought right-hander Ryan Franklin in to pitch. Notes: Hicks pinch-hit single was his first major league hit. ... Punto left the game in the fourth inning due to tightness in his left hamstring. Daniel Descalso replaced Punto at second base. ... The rookie defenceman connected 2:34 into overtime, and the Devils snapped a two-game skid with a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. "You always dream of this kind of stuff when youre a little kid," the 22-year-old Merrill said. "After 20 games went by and I hadnt scored, I think those dreams went away a little bit. I knew it would come when it came. Tonight was a good opportunity." The goal came in Merrills 31st NHL game and was set up by Adam Henrique winning a battle in the corner and Michael Ryder getting the puck and finding Merrill all alone above the left circle for an uncontested shot against Ilya Bryzgalov. "I saw that four guys kind of collapsed on Ryds," Merrill said. "I was calling for it and he made a great play. I was walking in all alone and fortunately it went in." The win was the second in six games for New Jersey (2-2-2), and it ended a slide that saw the Devils lose the last two games in overtime after giving up the lead late in the third period. "It was awesome for him to get his first goal in overtime," said Henrique, who might have gotten away with a holding-the-stick penalty just before the goal. "Its such an important win for the team. Thats one hes going to remember for the rest of his career." Cory Schneider made 19 saves and Andrei Loktionov scored in regulation for the Devils, who play Saturday night at Washington in their final game before the Olympic break. Taylor Hall had the goal for the Oilers, who lost for only the second time in seven games (5-1-1). Ilya Bryzgalov made 22 saves for Edmonton, which wont play again until Feb. 27. "We found different ways to get points in this stretch," defenceman Justin Schultz said. "We got some solid goaltending. Weve improved our game against these teams that are battling for playoff spots." The Devils hit three posts in tthe game, with Ryder clanging a shot off the crossbar with 9:20 to play.dddddddddddd Both teams went for the win in the final minutes of regulation. Henrique had two chances in close with just more than 4 minutes to go, and defenceman Andrew Ference and Matt Hendricks had chances for Edmonton a minute later. Schneider stopped a chance in close by Jordan Eberle early in overtime. With the Devils struggling to score, coach Pete DeBoer shook up his lines for the game and that led to the teams first goal. Loktionov, who was put at centre on Jaromir Jagrs line, opened the scoring at 11:01 with his first goal since Dec. 4. Jagr and defenceman Bryce Salvador set up the goal. Jagr carried the puck into the Oilers zone and found Salvador on the other side of the ice. He skated toward Bryzgalov and sent a cross-ice pass to a wide-open Loktionov for a shot into an open net. Jagrs assist was the 1,039th of his career, putting him one behind Marcel Dionne for ninth in NHL history. The public address announcer had not finished giving out the assists when Edmonton tied the game 29 seconds later. Hall skated the puck into the Devils end and worked a perfect give-and-go with Nail Yakupov for his 20th goal of the season. Schneider never had a chance to stop the shot into an open net. New Jersey had plenty of opportunities to take the lead in the second period. Devils defenceman Marek Zidlicky hit the post on a power-play shot and Ryane Clowe hit a post on a breakaway after an Oilers turnover. Mark Faynes shot from the point was past Bryzgalov and heading into the net when Ference swept it away from the crease. NOTES: Schultz played in his 100th NHL game. ...
