LONDON -- Arsenal began life without Cesc Fabregas with a 1-0 win over Udinese on Tuesday, although a lively performance from the visitors ensured the Champions League playoff remains in the balance heading into the second leg.
Rahim Moore Kids Jersey . Theo Walcott scored just four minutes into the first leg to raise spirits among demoralized Arsenal fans following Fabregas departure, but the injury-hit Gunners could not build on its early advantage. Only Wojciech Szczesnys saves ensured Arsenal goes to Italy next week with its slender advantage intact as it looks to play in the lucrative Champions League for the 14th consecutive season and guarantee at least $30 million from UEFA. "We tended to drop off a bit and there were gaps appearing but we dug in and gave absolutely everything tonight," Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey said. "We believe were capable of going over there to win. The most important thing is a clean sheet. Our defence was solid." Ramsey is one of the players expected to fill the boots left by Fabregas drawn-out move back to boyhood club Barcelona on Monday. "Its time to move on -- he was a great player for the club but now hes gone," Ramsey said. "We just have to concentrate on what weve got here. We believe the squad weve got is very talented." It was the Wales international who helped to give fans a glimmer of hope for the future by charging down the right flank and floating in the low cross that Walcott turned in past goalkeeper Samir Handanovic at the near post. "I want to get more goals," Walcott said. "Its a great ball Aarons played for me. Hopefully the boss will play me up front." But for all their speedy moves, the Gunners were regularly caught out on the counterattack by an Udinese side playing its first competitive match of the season and chasing a spot in the group stage for the first time in six years Udinese captain Antonio di Natale came close to levelling early on when he curled in the free-kick from 30 yards which looped off the crossbar. There was another scare for Arsenal after 25 minutes when Alex Song conceded possession deep in Udinese territory, allowing Pablo Armero to storm forward and easily go through the brittle barrier of defenders Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs. But with only Wojciech Szczesny to beat, Armero was thwarted by the goalkeepers strong save and the follow-up by Mauricio Isla was blocked by Song, who had raced back into his own half. At the start of the second half it required a last-ditch intervention by Johan Djourou to block a shot from Di Natale, who was Udineses most dangerous threat. A free kick from Serie As top scorer for the last two seasons was also pushed wide by Szczesny with 15 minutes remaining. "We deserved more than the actual result on the pitch," Udinese coach Francesco Guidoli said through a translator. "We didnt take all the chances we had and lost the game, but its still an open match ... and we built confidence." Arsenal carved out a late opening when Gervinho weaved his way through the Udinese defence and fed Walcott but the wingers shot was pushed wide by a diving Handanovic. "Im still coming back from my ankle injury," Walcott said. "The goalkeepers made an absolutely fantastic save. Its early days, its my first 90 minutes, and Im very happy with the result. Thats the important thing." The victory also came at a cost for Arsenal with Gibbs coming off at half time with a hamstring injury and his replacement Djourou forced off with the same problem after less than 10 minutes on the pitch. Arsenal was not helped by manager Arsene Wenger being unable to directly issue orders as he was banished to the stands by UEFA, his punishment for a tirade against a referee last season after the Champions League loss to Barcelona. And UEFA told Wenger at half time that he could be contravening its rules by passing instructions to assistant manager Pat Rice on the touchline via first team coach Boro Primorac, who was sitting alongside him in the directors box. New captain Robin van Persie and midfielder Samir Nasri were suspended, although the latter is set to follow Fabregas out of Arsenal and would have been cup-tied had he featured on Tuesday. Also Tuesday, Lyon beat Rubin Kazan 3-1, Czech champion Viktoria Plzen won by the same score at Copenhagen. There were two draws, with Benfica held 2-2 in the Netherlands at FC Twente and Austrian side Sturm Graz drawing 1-1 in Bulgaria at BATE Borisov.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Adrian Beltre had the big hits after Texas manager Ron Washington made the right call on replay twice in a matter of minutes. Beltre singled home Shin-Soo Choo with the game winner in the ninth inning, drove in his new teammate with a tying double in the seventh, and the Rangers saved a run on a successful replay challenge in a 3-2 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. "The system worked today," Beltre said. It worked with a little help from Washingtons instincts during Philadelphias two-run sixth inning. His first big decision was not to challenge a play at third when Jim Joyce called Cesar Hernandez safe on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Revere. Washington came out to talk to the crew chief but didnt challenge. Replay showed the call was correct. Moments later, Revere was called safe at second base by Cory Blaser on a pickoff attempt by Martin Perez. Washington asked for the review, which showed second baseman Donnie Murphys glove on Reveres back as he caught the ball before a diving Reveres hand was back on the bag. Revere would have scored on Ryan Howards double later in the inning, but instead only Jimmy Rollins came home for a 2-0 lead. Rollins broke the scoreless tie with a single. "From my vantage point, I thought he had him, really," Washington said. So did Murphy. "I knew that I caught the ball at the same time I was tagging him," Murphy said. "I had a gut feeling that he wasnt at the base yet. I think maybe what happened I blocked out the umpire a little bit just because of how the throw was." Choo reached base for the fourth time on a four-pitch walk to start the ninth against Phillies left-hander Mario Hollands (0-1), who was making his major league debut. After Elvis Andrus sacrifice bunt and walk to Prince Fielder on a full count, Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg went to right-hander B.J. Rosenberg. Beltre singled softly to rightt-centre field, scoring Choo without a throw.
Cody Latimer Kids Jersey. "Yeah, thats a tough spot for him," Sandberg said of Hollands. "I thought he showed his stuff actually even though he walked two guys. He threw some effective pitches to Fielder there, might have been one strike away from getting him out." New Texas closer Joakim Soria got the win with a perfect ninth inning in his season debut. Mitch Morelands single got the Rangers within 2-1 in the sixth, and Beltre had a tying double with two outs in the seventh to score Choo, who had two singles and was hit by a pitch before his ninth-inning walk. "It was nice to get that win coming from behind and now the chance to win the series," Beltre said. Perez had seven strikeouts through five shutout innings but didnt make it through the sixth, giving up hits to four of the six batters he faced in the inning. Howard batted fifth for the Phillies, snapping a streak of 665 straight regular-season starts as the cleanup hitter dating to June 29, 2008, also against the Rangers. He went 1 for 4 with two strikeouts, including one with two runners on in the eighth inning after the Rangers intentionally walked Marlon Byrd. Philadelphias A.J. Burnett left with a 2-1 lead after six innings in the debut for his fifth team covering 16 seasons. The 37-year-old right-hander gave up seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. NOTES: Rangers RHP Colby Lewis threw 92 pitches in a minor league exhibition game for Frisco as he continues his comeback from hip surgery. He gave up five runs in 5 1-3 innings. ... The Rangers tweeted an apology after a picture circulated from opening day showing dozens of empty beer cans and bottles at the base of a statue honouring Shannon Stone, the firefighter who died in a fall at the Rangers home stadium in 2011. The team said the debris was removed "in a timely manner but it should not have been allowed to be placed there in the first place.
