What a difference a year can make. In 2009, the Toronto Argonauts had a very difficult season. There were unknowns in ownership, coaching, and on-field performance. Now, David Braley has brought complete stability as an owner, Jim Barker has become a proven head coach and general manager, and as a team, the Argonauts were one win away from playing for the Grey Cup. With continuity comes consistency, with improvement very possible, if not likely. Everybody will be watching and evaluating Steven Jyles as a quarterback from the moment he steps onto the field. If Jyles can perform close to what a QB like Anthony Calvillo can, then the Argos can compete with anybody in the league. And if he cant, then another 9-9 season may be duplicated. Last year, I estimate that Toronto won four games because of special teams performances. Both from individual performances – Chad Owens; and collective efforts – fake punts and kicks, etc. This year, oppositions will have a new awareness about the Argos special teams, and because of that awareness, will not allow Toronto the same level of special teams success. Last year the Argos allowed the fewest points of any team on defence: 373 points allowed; 20.7 average points allowed per game. As much as their 2010 special teams success is unlikely to repeat itself in 2011, defensive play should again be the teams strength. 11 of 12 starters return on defence, along with the same coaching staff. The problem in Toronto is points – not enough of them. The Argos managed just 442 point last season, for a 24.5 per game average, the lowest total in the league. And dont forget, some of those touchdowns were off kick returns and defensive scores. Everybody in football strives for clarity: just knowing what to improve and how to go about improving it. And heading into the season, Toronto has that clarity. A great quarterback could make the Argos a great team. And who knows, maybe it will not be Jyles, Cleo Lemon, or Dalton Bell. Maybe it will be a surprise performer that appears out of nowhere – unlikely, but possible. Still, I have to go with logic on this one: if Jyles has a great year, Argonaut football has a great year; if he doesnt, the team doesnt. Is that putting too much emphasis on one player or position? Maybe, in that teams have won with average quarterback play if the rest of the team was great, but not very often. In baseball, it is the pitcher. In hockey, it is the goalie. In basketball, it is the centre. And in football, it is the quarterback. No position touches the ball more to determine the outcome of the game, and the QB also has the dual responsibility of directing all other offensive players so that they can touch the ball and determine the outcome of the game. I have a feeling that Jyles will have a great year. Barker will be more involved as a head coach and Jyles has the people around him that can turn a small play into a big one. Because there will come a time – a game when Jyles has to outperform either Calvillo, Buck Pierce, or Kevin Glenn in terms of both making key plays and avoiding key mistakes.
