Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Serena Williams quest for an 18th career singles Grand Slam title will have to wait a few more months. The world No. 1 will have to start a new winning streak too. Serbian Ana Ivanovic stunned Williams, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 Sunday to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The 14th-seeded Ivanovic ended Williams 25-match winning streak and dealt the American a shocking fourth-round exit. Ivanovic, who was the runner-up in Melbourne in 2008 and was the French Open champion later that year, took advantage of 31 unforced errors from Williams. "Its not easy playing such a champion and Ive never beaten her before," Ivanovic said during an on-court postmatch interview. Before this match, Ivanovic had lost all four previous matchups against Williams. In fact, she hadnt taken a set against her, but that all changed at Rod Laver Arena. A five-time Australian Open champion, Williams lost for just the second time in 53 matches at the event when winning the first set. Her only previous defeat came last year in the quarterfinals to Sloane Stephens. Williams fought back from a break down to win the first set, but in the second Ivanovic broke for a 3-2 edge. She finally finished off the set on her third chance, a forehand winner. "I had some confidence coming into todays match," Ivanovic said. "I really did certain things extremely well, you know, and I kept her under pressure I felt throughout the whole match." The errors then started to pile up for Williams, as she lost the first three games of the final set. Williams held serve to get within 5-3 and saved one match point when Ivanovic sent a forehand into the net. The encounter finally ended when Williams sent a return long. "I wasnt the best, but it was all Anas day. I thought she played really well," said Williams, who fired 13 aces. "I made a tremendous amount of errors. Im just not used to missing those shots." Williams has been dealing with a back injury, which she termed as not "life threatening" but said she was unable to get additional days off due to the schedule of playing essentially every other day as a Grand Slam tournament requires. She even contemplated not taking the court Sunday due to the injury, but gave Ivanovic all the credit for winning. "I think its almost good I lost today because now I know what I have to work on," added Williams, who pulled out of the doubles competition with her sister, Venus before their first-round match. That was because Venus had a lower left leg injury. Ivanovic will face either 30th seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard or Australian Casey Dellacqua in the quarterfinals. The jobs of top English players arent being threatened by a foreign legion. Thats an excuse saved for those not good enough. Ive always been of the mindset you become a better player by playing with the best competition possible. In training and in games, you need to be pushed. These foreign players bring the best out of their English brethren and it cant be said foreign Premier League players regularly outshine their English teammates in league play. But internationally, theres no comparison. Blame Englands system and formation instead. A basic 4-4-2 is constantly mindlessly rolled out, no matter the manager. Its predictable, boring, and doesnt suit the strengths of the players. Englands top player Wayne Rooney is misused and significant talent available is wasted. Without a generational type player like Cristiano Ronaldo, its about putting players in roles they can thrive. This boils down to identity. A national footballing identity for England is absent. What is trademark of England football? It used to be the unattractive long-ball, which fit the size and strength of the players of previous generations. This current generation is lost, there is no continuity. Coaching is part of this. Englands shortage of top qualified coaches, 1,161 elite coaches in comparison to Spains 12,700 or Germanys 5,500 speaks volumes. They simply dont know how to get the best out of what they have. Ill give Hodgson some credit: although the style remains as dry as the Sahara and unimaginative as ever, younger players are getting a look. Case and point is the bright play of Andros Townsend, but hes still relatively unproven and far from a difference maker. There was too much reliance in the past on the old guard. No longer are John Terry and Frank Lampard among others the key cogs and thats a good thing. Only Steven Gerrard remains. Although Gerrards club form warrants consideration, the Captain doesnt provide the same product for the national team, he never has. So here we are. Just over six months out from the World Cup, and the bar has lowered for England. It perhaps has not been lowered for the English media. And perhaps expectations remain sky-high for those choosing to ignore the inevitable. The realist looks beyond who plays for England, instead acknowledging the what and how is not good enough. The bar need be lowered. This international break has done just that.
