Agnew talked about the need for everyone to make better choices regarding the food they eat and the waste they create. 鈥淲hen you throw something away, think where it鈥檚 going,鈥?Agnew said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 expensive to send our garbage to a landfill. Wasted food costs each family an average of $400 per year. About 25 million people could be fed if we reduce our waste by 15 percent.鈥? The worms work to break down everything from old newspapers to coffee grounds to fruit and vegetable scraps to create fresh compost. 鈥淲e want to bring it back to the Earth,鈥?Agnew said. 鈥淭he worms can eat up to a half pound of food daily. Materials used to create the outfits included shoe boxes, magazines, newspapers, pop tabs, plastic bags and even a vest made out of Dum Dums lollipop wrappers. Seventh-grade teacher Tracy Silverman took first place for her dress, made of magazine pages and orange juice cartons.
