ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills have re-signed receiver Ruvell Martin before he was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next week. Martin had seven catches for 82 yards and also played a key role on special teams coverage last season, his sixth in the NFL. After being released by Buffalo prior to the start of last season, Martin re-signed with the Bills two days after the opener. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 214 pounds, he has 72 catches for 1,088 yards and seven touchdowns in 68 career games, having previously played with San Diego, Green Bay, St. Louis and Seattle. Except the Miami Heat, that is.The majority of people correctly predicted the top two players in the 2012 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, but the order in which they were taken was certainly a surprise. Darren Mattocks had been projected as the top pick, but instead Montreal Impact opted to go with Andrew Wenger. Wenger is probably the player in the draft class who is most ready to step straight into MLS. The 2011 MAC Herman Trophy winner is equally at home in the centre of defence, midfield or in attack. He was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in his sophomore season and followed that up last year by being named ACC Offensive Player of the Year. Versatility is a big benefit in a salary cap world, but it will be interesting to see where Impact Head Coach Jesse Marsch decides to play Wenger. The Impact have many options already at the back and in midfield, and it was interesting to hear Wenger say during the live SuperDraft broadcast on TSN2 that he has spoken to Marsch about potential positions and would ideally like to play as a midfielder. "We dont think he will be a starter right away," Montreal Sporting Director Nick De Santis told me. "However, we look at his play and see the physical and athletic attributes that he has and he is a notch above everyone. We feel we can bring him in slowly and he can give us some good minutes as the season progresses." "There were four players that we really liked but with Wenger we felt he was the total package. When you look at these kids, you look at their potential, but you also look at everything surrounding the player such as his mentality. We felt Wenger was the total package to be picked at number one." How quickly Wenger joins up with Montreal is another matter. De Santis confirmed following the draft that the Impact are aware Wenger is keen to finish school, which means he may not be with the club full-time until the end of April. "We will discuss that with him, but we truly believe in him finishing his school and we wont put any pressure on him. We have to put him in the best position to succeed." With the Impact taking Wenger, Mattocks was picked second by the Vancouver Whitecaps. Caps Head Coach Martin Rennie has plenty of attacking options within his squad, but believes Mattocks brings somethiing different.dddddddddddd The Jamaicans speed is his biggest asset, and he is certainly capable of scaring defenders. While the Whitecaps could really have benefitted defensively by having a player like Wenger, there were many times last year when they lacked a creative spark to change a game. Mattocks is unlikely to be a starter straight away, but is definitely a player who can be of benefit to the Whitecaps off the bench. In the days leading up to the SuperDraft, Toronto FC head coach Aron Winter promised to use both of his first round picks rather than trade them. The Dutchman stuck to his word, with Toronto selecting attacking midfielder Luis Silva fourth overall and defender Aaron Maund with pick number 12. Silva is a player who seems an ideal fit with Winters attacking philosophy at Toronto FC. He is a creative player, described by the Reds Director of Player Development Paul Mariner as a "genuine number 10." He had a great final year in his college career with 17 goals and 10 assists at UC Santa Barbara and will give Winter another option in his three-man midfield. Toronto FC were the only club in MLS holding two first round picks, and they used their second pick on Maund, a defender who has good technique and was a starter in each of his four years at Notre Dame. Hes not the answer to Torontos defensive problems, but during a long season hes sure to get a chance to show what he can do. Super Cooper This years SuperDraft rolled along at a fair pace, without timeouts, with no trades taking place, in fact it was fairly uneventful compared to years past. The biggest move of the day actually came on draft morning in Kansas City when the New York Red Bulls acquired forward Kenny Cooper from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a first round pick in 2013 and allocation money. Coopers acquisition seems a good fit for both club and player. Theres no doubt he is one of the leagues leading marksmen, but things just didnt quite work out for him in Portland. He will provide the Red Bulls with another option in attack and with his strength and physical presence, could help create more space for Thierry Henry to work in.
