Darcy Moores nomination as a Rising Star contender this week has again dragged into the spotlight the vexed question of the AFLs father-son rule. http://www.hockeyleafsnhl.com/authentic-joffrey-lupul-maple-leafs-jersey/ .Moore, 20, the son of Magpie champion and dual Brownlow Medallist, Peter, was nominated for the award on the back of about 40 minutes play at the weekend, but his first half against West Coast was so gobsmackingly impressive that he got the judges nod.His emergence as one of the games most promising youngsters means Collingwood has again hit the jackpot with the father-son rule.Moore follows in a long line of black-and-white family success stories, which have included David Clokes three boys, including Travis, and Ray Shaws sons, Heath and Rhyce. In fact, the Pies have arguably done better out of the rule than every other club with the exception of Geelong, whove managed to land the rather impressive trio of Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett and Tom Hawkins, and Essendon, who count Dustin Fletcher, Jobe Watson and Joe Daniher among their famous father-son alumni. This rule was introduced more than 60 years ago to bring back some romance into football by ensuring the bloodlines of champion players -- the fan favourites -- remained at the same club. Dynasties would flourish as club legends begat new generations of boy wonders. For that reason, most fans, coaches and recruiting officers love the guideline. After all, which Essendon supporter doesnt want to see reincarnated versions of Ken Fletcher and Timmy Watson running around in the red and black? Which Tigers fan could face seeing Matthew Richardson in colours other than those worn by his dad, Bull?Likewise with Jack Silvagni, the son of fullback-of-the-century Steve, who was in turn the son of Sergio -- the bandy-legged Carlton legend of the 1960s. Lygon St would have revolted had young Jack ended up in a guernsey that was any other colour than navy blue.Others, however, are not so enamoured with it.For all the romance of the father-son rule, it remains an impediment to what many believe needs to become an imperative in the game -- a pure and uncompromised draft.(The current rules state that a player qualifies for the father-son rule, and can nominate which AFL clubs he joins, if his father played more than 100 games with that club. But clubs who choose to draft sons of guns have to pay a market rate for them by giving up draft picks.)Add to the mix the New South Wales and Queensland academies, designed in part to fast-track local talent, such as the highly-rated Isaac Heeney to the Sydney Swans in one instance, and there remains considerable disquiet that the pathway to League football remains compromised. On top of that, there is a huge element of luck associated with the rule. While Geelong, Essendon and Collingwood have benefitted enormously, other clubs -- including Hawthorn, oddly, and North Melbourne -- have diddly squat to show for it. (Although perhaps we shouldnt feel too sorry for the Hawks given they traded Josh Kennedy to Sydney after 13 games and have watched him become one of the games elite in-and-under midfielders.)Three of the games greatest players - Leigh Matthews (2), Wayne Carey (2) and Tony Lockett (4) - have produced eight daughters between them but no sons. Which, of course, is absolutely no help at all to their respective teams, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and St Kilda/Sydney, under the father-son guidelines. While the leagues motives in introducing the rule were well meaning, by some quirk of fate it seems to have had the effect of favouring the strong and wealthy clubs (with the exception of Hawthorn) while doing little to help the small and impoverished. In fact, theres a strong argument to say the rule has sometimes meant the difference between some clubs winning premierships and being also-rans.Does anyone seriously imagine Geelong would have won its last three premierships without Matthew Scarlett, the premier fullback of his era, and Gary Ablett (for two of the three, anyway)? Would the Cats have prevailed over Collingwood in 2011 without Tom Hawkins who almost single-handedly carried them over the line following James Podsiadlys injury? And how pivotal were Cloke and Shaw -- highlighted by his game-turning goal square smother of Nick Riewoldt -- in the Pies grand final win in 2010?What will grate the other 16 clubs is that Collingwood and Geelong appear to have more talent ready to emerge from the father-son production line.Callum Brown and Josh Daicos, the sons of Magpie legends Gavin and Peter respectively, are nearing draft age and showing promising signs. The Pies do not have a first-round pick after last years Adam Treloar trade but must decide whether they want to take either or both of them in Novembers draft. The Cats, meanwhile, have four possible father-son recruits on their radar for the 2018 draft: Billy Brownless 16-year-old son, Oscar; Garry Hockings son Lochlan; David Menschs son Baxter and the son of ex-Geelong and North Melbourne wingman Robert Scott, Bailey.Moores Rising Star nomination this week has brought into sharp focus the vagaries of the father-son concept wh ich is threatening to have an impact on the competition far greater than its designers could ever have imagined. In a league where salary caps, player drafts and footy department expenditure are all monitored and tweaked by the AFL so the playing field remains as level as possible, the father-son rule remains the outlier -- the one variable that can turn pedestrian teams into world-beaters. http://www.hockeyleafsnhl.com/authentic-mitchell-marner-maple-leafs-jersey/ . I cant pinpoint a date, but I do remember a player from my youth. Brian Downing was with the Chicago White Sox at a time when I listened to every game I possibly could on the radio. That particular season the late great Harry Caray was calling the White Sox games. http://www.hockeyleafsnhl.com/authentic-brooks-laich-maple-leafs-jersey/ . SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. http://www.hockeyleafsnhl.com/authentic-kris-versteeg-maple-leafs-jersey/ . Siddikur, whose previous win on the circuit came in Brunei three years ago, finished his bogey-free round with a birdie on the 18th for a total of 17-under 199. Indias Shiv Chowrasia, who has finished runner-up in this tournament twice, was in second place after a 66. PORTLAND, Ore. -- James Harden easily exposed Portlands struggles on defense.Harden had 38 points and 10 assists for his seventh consecutive double-double, and the Houston Rockets beat the Trail Blazers 130-114 on Sunday night. It was his 14th double-double this season. His mentality?Make the right play, thats all, he said.As a point guard Im going to see a lot of defenses, so Ive just got to figure out what theyre doing and how to attack it and just go from there.Eric Gordon added 26 points including six 3-pointers for the Rockets, who have made at least 10 3-pointers in 16 straight games to match the NBA record set by the Warriors and Cavaliers last season. They finished the night with 17.Gordons 3-pointer gave the Rockets a 104-95 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Damian Lillards 3-pointer and Mason Plumlees reverse layup closed the gap to 104-100, but the Blazers couldnt get closer and Trevor Ariza hit a 3 from the corner to put the Rockets up 111-100.CJ McCollum scored 28 points and Lillard had 27 for the Blazers, who have lost six of their last eight games. Portland gave up 30 or more points to the Rockets in each quarter.Theyre a difficult team to guard, Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. I think James does a great job of playing the game and figuring out what needs to be done. The Rockets attempted an NBA-record 50 3-pointers and made 21 in a 117-104 victory at Sacramento on Friday night to open a five-game road trip. Harden had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.First-year Houston coach Mike DAntoni said he feels like the Rockets are finding a groove in his system.I think theyre getting more comfortable with how were doing things. Theyre moving the ball a little better, DAntoni said. We can still do better. The Blazers beat New Orleans 119-104 at home on Friday night after struggling on a 1-4 road trip. Portland is missing starting forward Al-Farouq Aminu, who has been sidelined for more than two weeks with a calf injury. Ed Davis starrted in his place against the Rockets. http://www.hockeyleafsnhl.com/authentic-tim-horton-maple-leafs-jersey/. Lillard and McCollum combined for 20 points as the teams finished the first quarter knotted at 35. The Rockets went on a 9-0 run late in the second and led 65-62 at the half, paced by Hardens 21 points.Ryan Anderson hit a 3-pointer that made it 83-75 for the Rockets, who led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter. The Blazers pressured, coming within 94-93 late after Lillard made a pair of free throws.Harden finished with five 3-pointers.Right now were not getting it done on the defensive end, Lillard said. I think thats what it comes down to. You look at the Cleveland game, we scored 120-something points and we lose. Thats a lot of points to score and not win the game. Tonight we had 114 and we lose. Obviously were capable of scoring, were going to put points on the board, but weve got to find a way to come up with more stops and be more consistent.TIP-INSRockets: Rookie Kyle Wiltjer has been traveling with the Rockets, although he hasnt played. Wiltjer, who went undrafted out of Gonzaga, is a Portland native and played for Jesuit High School, helping the team to three straight Oregon state championships.Trail Blazers: Through its first 19 games, Portland has made more than 200 3-pointers, more than any Blazers team in franchise history. The Blazers have 209 total.SCORING IS NOT THE ISSUEPortland has scored at least 100 points in 17 of 19 games this season.GORDONS GAMEGordon was just one off his season high for points.I just got off to a great start, he said. I know when I get off to a great start everything comes easier and more comfortable We just played well as a team, we moved the ball and did everything we needed to do to win.UP NEXTRockets: Houston visits the Jazz on Tuesday.Trail Blazers: Portland hosts the Pacers and former Blazers coach Nate McMillan on Wednesday.
