ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Vernon Wells, off to a horrendous start in his first season with the Los Angeles Angels, contributed to the winning rally after getting a much-needed day off. The three-time all-star, mired in 4 for 48 rut, singled sharply into the hole off the glove of shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera with one out in the 12th and scored on Jeff Mathis bases-loaded sacrifice fly to give the Angels a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday in the rubber game of their three-game series. "You know what? He needed that," teammate Torii Hunter said of Wells, who joined the Angels in a January trade with Toronto. "He squared the ball up and got that feel again of hitting the ball hard. "This is definitely a totally different scene for him. He was in Toronto for 12 years, and I definitely feel that has something to do with it. I mean, you change scenery, it feels uncomfortable sometimes and you feel like youre not welcomed until you do something special. And today he got that rally started. Hes on his way, and its uphill from here." Chad Durbin (0-1) walked Alberto Callaspo after Wells hit, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to rookie Mark Trumbo. "Theres no need to put a guy into scoring position. You have to make them hit the guy there," Durbin said. "Making them hit a ground ball was all I was thinking. I kept trying to throw sinkers middle-away and let it run off the plate or down, but I wasnt very efficient. I wasnt being aggressive over the plate. Thats what a reliever has to do -- attack the zone." An intentional walk to Trumbo loaded the bases for Mathis, who lifted a 2-1 pitch to medium centre field and Wells streaked home ahead of Michael Brantleys throw. Last September at Anaheim, Mathis beat the Indians by the same 4-3 score in the 16th inning with a sacrifice fly. "We just played a hot team, and they won eight in a row before yesterday. So just to cool those guys down shows that were playing pretty well ourselves," Hunter said. Hisanori Takahashi (1-0) posted his first AL victory with two perfect innings. The left-hander was 10-6 with the Mets last season as a rookie with 3.61 ERA in 53 appearances, including 12 starts. Angels right-hander Ervin Santana, still looking for his first win of the season, gave up three runs and six hits over seven-plus innings and struck out three. Santana, who has spent his entire seven-year career with the Angels and defeated every American League team except Cleveland, entered the eighth with a 3-2 lead and departed after giving up a leadoff single to Adam Everett. Brantley greeted Scott Downs with a single that sent Everett to third. Everett was caught in a rundown and tagged out by third baseman Callaspo after he fielded Cabreras grounder. But Brantley and Cabrera both advanced on Downs wild pitch, and Brantley scored the tying run on a groundout by Shin-Soo Choo before Fernando Rodney came in and struck out Carlos Santana. The blown save by Downs left Santanas career record against the Indians at 0-6 with a 4.98 ERA. "He has great life on his fastball, a great sinker and a slider that he can throw for strikes anytime he wants," said Indians shortstop Orlando Cabrera, who played for the Angels during Santanas first three seasons in the majors. "When you have the stuff that Ervin has, it was just a matter of him staying healthy. Ive been watching him on TV, and hes become a pitcher, not a thrower. And hes got a great team behind him that can make good plays defensively." Cleveland had runners at the corners with one out in the fourth, but Santana escaped the jam on a double-play grounder by Orlando Cabrera, whose comebacker deflected off the pitchers glove to second baseman Howie Kendrick. The Angels got three in the bottom half against Carlos Carrasco for a 3-1 lead. Kendrick led off with a double in the gap and circled the bases on a throwing error to second base by Asdrubal Cabrera, who was in short left field along with Orlando Cabrera for the cutoff throw as first baseman Matt LaPorta hustled over to cover the bag. Bobby Abreu then drew his sixth walk of the series and Hunter drove an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left-centre, the 15th homer by the Angels this season and only the second with anyone on base. "He just hung a slider. I saw it, my radar went off and I was able to put something on it," Hunter said. Cleveland got a run back in the fifth when Everett beat out a two-out single to deep shortstop and scored on Brantleys double. Carrasco allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks. "Carrasco threw a tremendous ballgame and had a very live fastball," manager Manny Acta said. "I dont think he gave up anything on the fastball. The home run came was on a slider and Kendricks double was on a breaking ball." NOTES: Angels relievers have not been charged with a run in 22 innings over their last seven games, after giving up 14 runs and six homers in 18 1-3 innings during the teams first five games of the season. ... Indians RHP Joe Smith, who began the season on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained abdominal muscle, is expected to be activated on Friday for the opener of a three-game series against Baltimore at Progressive Field. CF Grady Sizemore and INF-DH Jason Donald, who have been on rehab assignments with Double-A Akron, will join Triple-A Columbus on Thursday for a game at Toledo. Fiorentina took the lead following a terrible blunder from Morgan De Sanctis. The Napoli goalkeeper rushed out of his area to intercept a long pass from Facundo Roncaglia by the halfway line, but completely misjudged the ball which bounced over him and into the goal. Patriots Super Bowl Jersey 2015 . -- Adam Cracknell scored a tiebreaking goal with 2:20 to play and Chris Stewart had a goal and two assists as the St. MINNEAPOLIS -- Down 11 in the fourth quarter against a team he feels the New York Knicks should beat, Carmelo Anthony didnt see another disappointing loss coming. He saw an opportunity, and thats exactly what he told Raymond Felton. "I told Raymond, Im going to try to go get it," Anthony said. Once he made up his mind, the Minnesota Timberwolves were powerless to stop him. Anthony had 36 points and nine rebounds, scoring 12 points down the stretch to rally the Knicks to a 100-94 victory on Friday night. Anthony topped 30 points for the 17th time this season for the Knicks, who trailed 87-76 with seven minutes to play. But Anthony did all of his fourth-quarter damage in those final minutes, hitting a 19-footer with 1:10 to play that put New York up for good. "This was one of the games we had to win," Anthony said. "We had to go get it. Our backs were kind of against the wall, being down 11. It was one of those games we didnt want to look back on saying we should have won this game, kind of like the Wizards game." Derrick Williams scored 19 points and Ricky Rubio had 18 points and 11 assists for the Timberwolves, who lost for the 14th time in 16 games. Nikola Pekovic added 16 points and 11 rebounds, but Minnesota had no answer for Anthony down the stretch. "Hes a superstar," Rubio said. "Hes a scorer. He makes everything look easy." The Knicks will have to savour this victory in Minnesota a little longer than they initially expected. J.R. Smith scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Knicks, who found out earlier in the day that they would be staying in Minnesota at least one extra day thanks to a massive snow storm that was blanketing the East Coast. They planned to get up on Saturday morning and do some scouting on their next opponent, the Los Angeles Clippers, who are scheduled to play at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. The Knicks hoped to leave at some point on Saturday once the weather cleared. Luke Ridnour scored 20 points for the Minnesota, which had a chance to take the lead in the final 30 seconds when it trailed 95-94. But Ridnour didnt get the call he wanted on a drive to the basket, and Smith converted a three-point play on the other end to hold off the feisty Wolves, who again were playing without Kevin Love (broken hand), Chase Budinger (knee) and Andrei Kirilenko (quad). "If we keep pllaying like that we are going to win games," coach Rick Adelman said.dddddddddddd The team with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference had a sense of urgency after a loss to the improving Washington Wizards earlier in the week. With three games to go before the All-Star break, coach Mike Woodson said, "We have to win all three." This one was in doubt for quite a while. The Knicks came into the game second in the league in 3-point shooting, giving them a huge advantage against the Timberwolves, who are dead last. The Wolves missed their first six 3s and were just 1 for 13 for the game. But the Knicks werent able to parlay that dreadful performance into any substantial edge, going 8 for 26 themselves. Anthony, who leads the NBA in first-quarter scoring, came out hard with 11 points in the opening period. Williams wasnt strong enough to handle the leagues second-leading scorer and Dante Cunningham couldnt hang with him on the perimeter, presenting a matchup problem that certainly isnt unique to the Timberwolves. Williams gave it his all though, making Anthony work for his shots. Anthony missed 11 of his first 20 shots from the field and was 2 for 9 on 3-pointers. "Hes one of the best scorers in the NBA, if not the best," Williams said. "Youve just got to try and battle him the whole time and I tried my best." His confidence growing as the fourth quarter progressed, Williams had a steal and a dunk, threw down an alley-oop on a rainmaker of a pass from Rubio and scored underneath for an 83-74 lead with 8:30 to play. But Anthony kept coming. Left on an island to deal with him, Anthony backed Williams down in the post relentlessly over the final seven minutes. He scored on an up-and-under, a pull-up jumper and got to the foul line to get the Knicks back in the game. His two free throws cut the deficit to 90-89 with 3:24 to go and also gave Williams his fifth foul. His runner over Cunningham iced the game in the final 20 seconds. "He just wouldnt let us lose. He made offensive play after offensive play," Woodson said. NOTES: Adelman picked up a rare technical foul and Cunningham did as well for arguing foul calls with the officials. ... Amare Stoudemire picked one up in the fourth quarter for gesturing toward the officials. ... Wolves G JJ Barea left the game in the second quarter with a left leg injury but was able to return in the second half. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
