CALGARY - The Calgary Roughnecks power play struck early and often Saturday night, putting the Washington Stealth in a hole they were unable to dig out of. Dane Dobbie had three goals and a game-high seven points as Calgary made it five straight wins, defeating the Washington 13-11 in National Lacrosse League action. Dobbies biggest goal of the night was his final one, a clutch conversion of a set-up in front from Cory Conway with 2:40 remaining in the game that made it 12-10 for Calgary and would end up the game-winner. "I think the guys have really learned to play with poise and patience and composure. When the chips are down some of our guys made some really big plays," said Roughnecks coach Dave Pym. Washington, which trailed by five goals earlier in the game, cut the Roughnecks lead to one on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter, but never recovered from falling behind 4-0 on four consecutive power play goals inside the games first six minutes. "Theyve been playing really, they have a great, well-balanced offence. Four is too big of a lead to start off with," said Anthan Iannucci, who led Washingtons offence with four goals. Calgary (10-3) also got big offensive nights from Scott Ranger with four goals and Jeff Shattler with three. Shawn Evans, Curtis Dickson and Peter McFetridge also scored. Daryl Veltman had six assists. Washington (4-9) has lost three in a row on the road. Also scoring were Dean Hill with two, Matt Beers, Rhys Duch, Brett Bucktooth, Martin Cummings and Kyle Ross. "Everybody on our offence is dominant. We just need two guys to get hot and if that happens, were a hard team to stop," said Shattler, who also scored three times Friday night in a 15-10 win over Minnesota. With the win, Calgary climbs back into a tie atop the Western Division with Colorado and assures itself of a top-two finish in the division and a home playoff game. "We just have to keep doing what we do, hopefully win out, and that puts pressure on Colorado," Dobbie said. Down 10-7 headed to the fourth quarter, Washington climbed to within a goal on Bucktooths goal at 4:52, followed 43 seconds later by Iannuccis third of the night. A spectacular goal from Dickson, deking goalie Tyler Richards as he dove through the air, gave the Roughnecks some breathing room at 6:12. Iannucci cut the lead back to one again at 11-10 three minutes later, but that was as close as Washington got. "Theyve got a great offence and big boys on the back end but we just stuck to our game plan and it worked out for us," said Dobbie. Washingtons near fourth quarter comeback came against a Roughnecks team that had outscored the opposition 18-0 over the past three fourth quarters. "Thats awfully long way back," said Washington coach Chris Hall. "Things really have to go right for you in somebody elses building to bury yourself 5-0 and expect to win a lacrosse game. It means you have to be plus-six the rest of the time against a team that is 10-3 in the league? No chance. Its pretty frustrating." Trailing 7-4, Washington closed the gap to two goals when Hill converted Jeff Zywickis pass for a power-play goal at 5:57 of the third quarter. The Roughnecks regained momentum shortly after that when Shattler completed his hat trick at 6:58 and Ranger notched his third goal of the game three minutes later. Duch got Washington on the scoreboard at 4:23 of the second quarter. Making it 5-1, it was the first goal surrendered by Calgary in over 35 minutes. Picking up on where they left off Friday night when Calgary scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter in a 15-10 victory over Minnesota, the Roughnecks began the game with another impressive 5-0 quarter. The early barrage was aided by undisciplined play by the Stealth, who took the games first five minor penalties. "We continue, game after game after game after game, to shoot ourselves in the foot and its becoming ridiculous," said Hall. "It seems to be different guys every time doing something totally ridiculous." Calgary outshot Washington 61-53. Mike Poulin got the victory while Tyler Richards took the loss.
