LJUBLJANA, Slovenia -- Greece rallied with a big fourth quarter to beat defending champion Spain 79-75 in the second round of the European basketball championship on Thursday. And Italys undefeated run came to an end against host Slovenia. Trailing by five at the end of three quarters, Greece outscored Spain 27-18 in the fourth to notch a win that could prevent Spain from winning a third consecutive title. "We controlled the rhythm, we made our shots and we had luck on our side," said Greece guard Kostas Sloukas. Vassilis Spanoulis led Greece with 20 points. Rudy Fernandez and centre Marc Gasol both had 20 for Spain. Earlier, Croatia used its size to rout Finland 88-63 for its first victory in the second round. Guard Goran Dragic scored 22 points as Slovenia beat Italy 84-77. His brother Zoran added 15 as the brothers scored all nine of Slovenias points in the last two minutes of the game, including a 3-pointer by Goran with 17.5 seconds left. Goran added 10 rebounds, while Mirza Begic had four blocked shots. Italy was the only team to finish the group stage with a perfect 5-0 record, but fell in its first second-round game against an inspired host team carried by the partisan crowd. Because group results are carried over into the second round, Italy has a 2-1 record, the same as Slovenia, and still has to play Croatia. "It is going to be difficult for us to qualify (for quarterfinals)," Italy coach Simone Pianigiani said. Italy was unable to compensate for the lack of size against the bigger Slovenians, who scored 46 points in the paint, compared to 22 for Italy. "They are a smart team but we played very good defence. We had 44 rebounds, they 29, that was the key," Goran Dragic said. Slovenia coach Bozidar Maljkovic agreed: "Those 10 rebounds were very important. Thats why we won the game." Greece was down by 10 at the end of the first quarter, but used the absence of Gasol in the second quarter to take the lead, 41-38 at halftime. Gasol collected three personal fouls in the first quarter and sat out the second. "Marc plays 40 minutes in the NBA and never fouls out, he knows how to take care of himself. I dont know what happened here," Spain coach Juan Orenga said. Gasol returned in the third, scored 11 straight points, and Spain outscored Greece 19-11 to regain the lead 57-52. Spanoulis then scored five straight to put Greece back up by one. Gasol made two free throws to leave Spain down by four, but forward Mikhail Bramos nailed a 3-pointer with one minute remaining to score the vital points that secured Greeces victory. Spanoulis made four consecutive free throws to offset a 3 by Alex Mumbru and Greece cruised home. "We are still walking in hell and we have to keep walking," Greece coach Andrea Trinchieri said. Greece and Spain have 1-2 records. Croatias big men dominated the boards as the team pulled down 47 rebounds, while Finland finished with 30. Damjan Rudez made five of eight 3-point attempts and finished with 17 points. Croatias defence also shut down Finlands top scorer, Petteri Koponen, whose first points came when he made a 3-pointer at the buzzer of the third quarter. He finished with five points. nike roshe run hyperfuse herren . Overton, whose 62 topped the old mark by a stroke at The Mines Resort & Golf Club, and Jacobson, who carded a seven-under 64 on Friday, finished 36 holes at 13-under 129. The German international rounded Florian Fromlowitz for his 11th goal of the season in the 60th minute and set up Milivoje Novakovic for a simple tap in. There was Lupuls promising 53-point sophomore season for Carlyles Anaheim Ducks in 2005-06. There was an injury-shortened 2009-10 campaign and a frustration-loaded return the following season. BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins have three rookie defencemen in the lineup for the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Rangers. Its not because they want to. Its because they have to. "As you know, were getting thin here," Bruins coach Claude Julien said on Friday, a day after Torey Krug, in his first career NHL playoff game, scored to send the game into overtime and Boston defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven, second-round playoff series. With veterans Dennis Seidenberg, Andrew Ference and Wade Redden injured, the Bruins used first-round draft pick Dougie Hamilton along with Krug and Mart Bartkowski on defence. Hamilton assisted on Krugs goal with 2:55 left in regulation, and Bartkowski played a career-high 26 minutes in the 3-2 victory over the Rangers. "For a coach, you couldnt ask for a better situation," Julien said on Friday, when his team took the day off to rest up for Sundays Game 2. "A lot of credit goes to the coaching staff down there (in the minor leagues) thats done a great job at preparing those guys." Julien would not say whether any of his injured players would be able to return for the second game. If not, hell continue to rely on his rookies. Hamilton, who made the team out of training camp and played 42 games in the lockout-shortened season, said it helps to know that he wont be yanked out of the lineup with one bad shift. Even if its only because the Bruins have no choice. "For all of us, its not just trying to belong, but getting that opportunity to get regular shifts. It helps you stay focused," he said. "It makes it easier when you have that confidence that you can just stay in the game and focus on the game." Hamilton, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2011 draft, had five goals and 11 assists this season while averaging about 17 minutes per game. But he moved up the deepth chart when injuries stripped the Bruins of three of their top six defencemen.dddddddddddd "Weve got to remember that hes 19 years old," Julien said. "Hes made some unbelievable plays on some goals; we saw that early when he came in and we seemed in awe of that. Playoffs is another step and hes taken that step extremely well, to me." To help fill in, the Bruins called Bartkowski up from the AHL for the third time this year; he had two assists and six penalty minutes in 11 games for Boston this year. And Krug, whos played three NHL games in the past two seasons, was brought up from Providence on Tuesday after Seidenberg lasted just 37 seconds in the first-round finale over Toronto. "What weve seen from (Krug) the few games hes played with us, he doesnt seem to be intimidated by anything, or any circumstances," Julien said. "I didnt see a guy that was nervous at all. If anything, I saw a guy that was extremely confident at making the executions that he needed to make." The other change the Bruins made on defence was to rely even more heavily on Zdeno Chara. The 2009 Norris Trophy-winner, who averaged about 25 minutes per game in the regular season, has played about 30 minutes per game in the playoffs, including 35 minutes in Game 7 against the Maple Leafs and more than 38 in the opener of the Rangers series. "Hes in great shape, and hes got a couple of days here to recover. So I dont see that being an issue," Julien said. "To be honest with you, right now we dont have a choice. You deal with it the best way you can." And so do the Rangers. "With all the minutes he has, the more tired hes going to get," New York defenceman Steve Eminger said. "At the end of the day, it doesnt matter if they have six veterans (on defence). We just have to put even more pressure on them and generate more offensively." cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
