OTTAWA -- Milestones dont mean much for Daniel Sedin in November. Sedin scored his 300th career goal and added an assist as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-2 Thursday night. Vancouver (13-9-5) came in having lost seven of its past eight games, but a solid effort finally put an end to their recent struggles. That was of more interest to Sedin than his own stats. "When youre in the middle of the season you dont think too much about it, but Im sure after the season or looking back it will be different," said Sedin. "It was nice to help the team (win), thats for sure." With the Canucks playing the first of a four-game road trip, Sedin said picking up the win was instrumental in setting the tone for the next three. "This is a big road trip for us and to start with a win is going to give us a lot of confidence moving forward," said Sedin. "As a team we played pretty good. The (penalty kill) did a good job and the power play got one, too, so overall it was a good game." David Booth, Jason Garrison, Dale Weise and Mike Santorelli also scored for the Canucks. Roberto Luongo finished with 37 saves. Clarke MacArthur and Mika Zibanejad scored for the Senators (10-12-4). Craig Anderson allowed four goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Robin Lehner, who allowed one goal on 13 shots. With the loss the Senators, who beat the Washington Capitals 6-4 on Wednesday, are now 0-4-1 when playing back-to-back nights. Senators coach Paul MacLean said his team deserved the loss. "We got what we earned," said MacLean. "(Wednesday) night we got what we earned and 26 times a year so far weve gotten what weve earned whether that was wins or losses. Every night weve earned it and (Thursday) we earned it again." MacLean added the Sens continue to make too many mistakes. "We dont play hard enough on the forecheck. We dont play hard enough coming back. We dont play hard enough defensively. Our goaltenders arent playing hard enough. Were just not playing hard enough for long enough to have an opportunity to win." The difference in this one was the second period when the Canucks scored four goals as 17,931 at the Canadian Tire Centre looked on. "Quite honestly I thought weve played better games than (Thursdays) game," said Vancouver coach John Tortorella. "Its good to get a win for us. No complaints here. Weve lost some games we should have won and I thought we played well enough to win, but we still have a lot of things to work on." Daniel Sedin tied the game 1-1 just 31 seconds into the second period as he beat Anderson far side. Just 45 seconds later the Canucks took the lead on Booths second goal of the season as he beat Anderson cleanly. Booth has had his share of struggles and admitted its nice to contribute offensively. "I felt good on my skates so thats the biggest thing," said Booth. "But its over now and youve got to start gearing up for Saturday in New York." The Canucks then went on to make it 3-1 with a power-play goal as Garrison was left all alone in front. Ottawa has allowed at least one power-play goal in each of the last seven games. Midway through the period Weise picked up a Garrison rebound and beat a sprawled Anderson. Weise was one of the Canucks better players and if the team hopes to have any long-term success they are going to need secondary scoring. "This is what you need for good teams to win," said Weise. "We cant rely on the (Sedin) twins every night. Our secondary scoring has to pitch in and it has to be consistent." Less than 20 seconds after Weises goal Andersons night came to an end. The Senators managed to cut the lead in half as Zibanejad made it 4-2 with just over one minute remaining in the period. The Canucks made it 5-2 early in the third as Santorelli took advantage of a Jason Spezza giveaway behind the Ottawa net. Santorelli grabbed the puck, shot and then picked up his own rebound to beat Lehner between the legs. Strangely enough Ottawa got off to the start it wanted as MacArthur picked up his 100th career goal midway through the first to give the home team a 1-0 lead, but it was never able to capitalize on the momentum. "Its frustrating," said Ottawas Kyle Turris. "That lapse we had in the start of the second and then we played pretty well the last half of the second and the third. Weve got to execute coming out of our zone and weve got to be more crisp with the puck." With the win Vancouver continues to dominate the Senators. Vancouver has won six straight and 10 of the past 11 meetings between the clubs. Ottawa has lost three in a row and six of its last seven home meetings against the Canucks. General manager Sam Presti said Friday that the Thunder had not yet scheduled Westbrooks surgery and would not have an accurate timeline for his return until after the procedure was done. No one would rule out Westbrooks possible return if Oklahoma City keeps advancing in the playoffs, and All-Star teammate Kevin Durant only said his teammates "hope" Westbrook can play again this post-season. "Were not trying to rush him or bring him back ahead of schedule. We want to make sure hes healthy and his knee is right," Durant said. "Thats our only concern with it right now. ... We have to come together as a team and worry about the basketball. All he has to worry about is him getting healthy." The three-time All-Star was hurt in Game 2 of the Thunders playoff series against Houston on Wednesday night. Rookie Patrick Beverley lunged for a steal in the second quarter and his hip collided with Westbrooks knee. Beverley called Westbrooks injury "unfortunate" and said Oklahoma City is still dangerous without him. "Anyone who knows me knows I dont go out there and try to hurt anybody," Beverley said. "I play at one speed and thats fast. I was just trying to make a play on the ball before they called a timeout and its just unfortunate." Coach Scott Brooks claimed after Westbrook missed practice Thursday that Westbrook would be "fine tomorrow," but the team found out differently Friday morning. "Our team as a whole, weve got a resilient group of guys, a lot of character within that locker room and a group that enjoys playing together and has been through some adversities over the last several years that theyve been together. Wed expect them to adjust, come together and have different guys step in and play well collectively," Presti said. "Once we were able to gather all of the necessary information and everything was accumulated, it was an easy decision for our medical team." Game 3 is Saturday night in Houston. Westbrook averaged 24 points and seven assists in the first two games, both won by top-seeded Oklahoma City. Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin recalled how he was able to return six days after surgery on his meniscus in college at Oklahoma, but his didnt have to be repaired. The Thunder said Westbrooks would be repaired. "Theyre still a great team even without him but hes a huge part of their offence," Griffin said. "A great player, so it does leave them a little vulnerable." One of the most polarizing figures in the league, Westbrook has displayed a quick temper to go along with his lightning-fast drives to the basket and increasingly accurate pull-up jumpers. Hes also known for his outlandish fashion sense, often wearing glasses without the lenses and unusual shirts. Durant said the Thunder appreciate him more for his dedication for the team and because he "gives his all every second hes on the floor.dddddddddddd" "A lot of people may not like what he brings to our team. But inside, we love what he does," Durant said. "Hes a different player, a different person, but we love what he brings. Its unfortunate that he cant compete at the highest level of basketball, which is the playoffs." Westbrook smashed his right hand down on the scorers table after Beverley crashed into him, but he remained in the game Wednesday night although he was clearly hobbling. Presti said Westbrook was allowed to keep playing because he felt comfortable and the team considered the injury action "consistent with a bone bruise." It came as a surprise when Durant and the rest of the team arrived at the practice facility Friday that Westbrook, who had been seemingly indestructible, would be out. In his fifth NBA season, Westbrook has never previously missed a game. He had the leagues longest active streak of consecutive games played, with 394 straight regular-season games. He also has played in all 45 of Oklahoma Citys playoff games, including last years run to the NBA Finals. "I think we all know Russell. He obviously wants to play. But at the end of the day, this was a medical decision," Presti said. Backup Reggie Jackson figures to move into Westbrooks starting spot as the only other player with any significant time playing the point. Oklahoma City traded away former backup point guard Eric Maynor in February, getting only a trade exception and the rights to a Greek player with no NBA experience in return. James Harden, who used to share some time at the point, is now on the opposite side as an All-Star for Houston. Veteran Derek Fisher has previously played the point, but has been primarily used as a spot-up 3-point shooter in two stints with Oklahoma City. Brooks wouldnt divulge his plans for how to replace Westbrook, but said Durant will have to take on even more playmaking duties. "Hes definitely going to have to be a guy thats going to have to handle the ball more. But he has actually for this past year has handled the ball more with that second unit," Brooks said. "Hes always been somewhat of our point forward." In general, the Thunder have avoided major injuries to their core players during their ascent into NBA title contenders. Durant has missed only five games over the past four seasons. His only time out of the lineup this season was the final game of the regular season, when he was healthy. In total, the Thunders starters missed only eight combined games all of this season. Westbrook, Durant and Serge Ibaka started every game of the 2011-12 season, and centre Kendrick Perkins missed just one. "Injuries are a part of sports and every team has to deal with them. Now, our team has to come together and make some adjustments," Presti said.
