PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers have turned their season around by playing smart hockey. Some good luck hasnt hurt, either. Matt Read scored a pair of goals to lead the Flyers to their fifth win in six games, 4-1 over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. "Were having fun out there, doing simple things, not turning pucks over and just playing simple hockey," Read said. "Were a good team, and it just takes a matter of time and a couple of lucky bounces to get a positive atmosphere and get things clicking and going our way." Vincent Lecavalier also scored and Scott Hartnell added an empty-net goal for the Flyers, who set a season-high with 46 shots. Philadelphia began the season by losing seven of its first eight games. "Theyre playing good hockey," said Flyers coach Craig Berube, who replaced the fired Peter Laviolette after Philadelphia began the season with three losses. "There are things they can improve on. Youre always working to get better, and thats what were going to do." Reads goals came 1:40 apart late in the second period. Steve Downie and Sean Couturier assisted on both tallies for Philadelphia (9-10-2), which outshot Buffalo 46-30. Tyler Myers netted the lone goal for Buffalo, which is 1-3 under interim coach Ted Nolan and an NHL-worst 5-18-1 this season. "We have to play a certain way, and by doing stupid things like we have been, its going to be ugly games," Nolan said. "Ive seen enough in four games. We have to change some things, and players have to do it or its going to be a long year. "You have to do simple things. You cant have turnovers, cant have foolish penalties, cant be muscled off the puck." The game was the first between two First Nations head coaches. Nolan is Ojibwe, and from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Berube is part-Cree and from Calahoo, Alberta. Myers beat Ray Emery from close range in the first period to stake Buffalo to a 1-0 lead. But it was all Philadelphia from that point. "We have to grind it out," Nolan said. "It cant be a sometime thing, it has to be an all-the-time thing. We have to look ourselves in the mirror and get a certain mindset." Read tied it with a one-timer from the slot with 6:51 left in the second and gave Philadelphia a one-goal advantage by deking goalie Ryan Miller, while all alone in front of the crease, and putting a highlight-reel shot into the top of the net with 4:11 remaining in the period. "You cant get down on yourself or your teammates," Read said of the Flyers poor start. "We have a great team. Now its about having fun and keep playing hard." Berube said there cant be any letup from his players. "You have to stay on it all the time," he said. "You cant take a break. You have to be really smart out there. You have to keep working at it. If you want to be a really good team in this league, it takes a lot of work and a lot of preparation." Lecavalier one-timed a slap shot from the right circle midway through the third to make it 3-1. Ville Leino and Tyler Ennis had assists for Buffalo, which has lost three straight. NOTES: The Flyers have outscored opponents 24-8 over their last six games. ... Nevertheless, he was still happy with the results. Danks was solid in his season debut and Jeff Keppinger drove in the winning run on a single in the 11th inning and the Chicago White Sox beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday night. Danks allowed three runs and four hits in six innings in his first start since undergoing shoulder surgery in August to repair a capsule tear and remove debris in his rotator cuff and biceps. He struck out five, walked none and hit a batter in the opener of the interleague series. "It was a good first one," Danks said. "I did as much as I had hoped to do. Obviously, as the game went on, I wanted to go further, but I totally understand the move, totally agree with the move and Im glad we got the win." Danks went 3-4 with a 5.70 ERA in nine starts last season as the teams opening day starter. He last pitched May 19, 2012, against the Cubs. The left-hander made four minor-league rehab starts before debuting Friday. He threw 76 pitches, allowing a two-run home run to Derek Dietrich in the fourth. "The best part was his command and keeping everything in check and doing everything he needed to do," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "He was getting people to swing and miss. Its what you would expect of him coming back and being at full strength." Paul Konerko started the White Sox rally with a one-out single in the 11th. Pinch runner Tyler Greene moved to third when Dayan Viciedo singled off the glove of second baseman Dietrich. After Ryan Webb (1-2) intentionally walked Conor Gillaspie, Keppinger singled to left field. "It just feels like our offence is starting to do a little bit more and were still getting good pitching," Keppinger said. Nate Jones (1-4) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the win. Marlins starter Tom Koehler gave up three runs in six innings in his first career interleague start. He struck out three and walked one. Koehler remained in the game after a Keppinger line drive struck him on the back of his right shoulder in the third inning. Koehler said the ball struck him underneath his shoulder blade. "It actually hit me in a pretty decent spot," Koehler said. "As far as affecting the way I threw, it had no bearing on anything, which was nice. It will be a little sore tomorrow, but it shouldnt be anything to worry about." The Marlins tied it 3-3 in the seventh. Marcell Ozuna led off with a double, forcing Danks from the game. "I felt like I was able to make the ball move and do what I wanted to do for the most part. There were a few pitches I would like to have back. I felt like I made a good pitch to Polanco, and he got a knock and the homer. I should have thought more about that one." The White Sox scored two runs to tie it 2-2 in the fifth. Keppingers RBI groundout scored Viciedo, who reached on a force out and advanced on a Gillaspie double. Hector Gimenez hit a two-out single to tie it. The White Sox threatened in the 10th. Keppinger led off with a single before Chad Qualls hit Gimenez with a pitch. Both runners advanced on an Alejandro De Aza sacrifice bunt. After Qualls intentionally walked Alexei Ramirez, Rios hit into an inning-ending double play with a close call at first that brought out Ventura to talk to umpire Angel Hernandez. Replays showed Rios foot on the bag before the throw arrived. "You have to put it behind you," Ventura said. "Fortunately, you get somebody on, and Paulie gets on and Tank (Viciedo) got that hit (in the 11th). Stuff happens. You just have to roll with it." NOTES: The White Sox are hopeful LHP Chris Sale will make his scheduled start on Tuesday against the Cubs. He missed his start Wednesday against the Red Sox because of shoulder tendinitis.
