NEW ORLEANS -- Unrestricted NBA free agent Daniel Gibson surrendered to police Monday to face a second-degree battery charge. Gibson is accused of breaking another mans jaw with a punch during an argument at a nightclub on July 8, New Orleans Police spokeswoman Remi Braden said. Gibsons wife, Keyshia Cole, sang at the Essence Festival on July 6. Online court records show he was released on $20,000 bond. Gibson said he was protecting his family when the fight occurred at a club where he and Cole had gone to celebrate while in New Orleans. "It was toward the end of the night," Gibson said. "We encountered a couple of people and I dont know what their motives or intentions were but they came off the wrong way. This guy got real aggressive toward my wife and myself and I did what I felt was necessary to handle the situation." Gibson said the man said "something" to his wife but wouldnt go into details. "He was very disrespectful toward my wife," he said. Braden said Gibsons accuser is from St. Rose, about 25 miles from New Orleans. She did not identify him. Gibson played seven years for the Cleveland Cavaliers but was out with injuries much of last season. He said he turned himself in because, "I felt like I had nothing to hide." Gibson said he has been in contact with a few teams throughout this summer. "Then something like this happens and all they (teams) see is that it looks as though Im out there doing crazy things and I wasnt raised that way. There are a lot of accusations being made and I just want to protect my family and everything Ive worked so hard for." Gibson said no court date has been set.

Nash, from Victoria, had 16 points and 10 assists to become only the fifth player to surpass 10,000 career assists, joining John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson. Nash said he tweaked his back in the game, but that he was OK. "Its really hard to enjoy it right now," Nash said of the assists. "I dont want to discredit it, or not appreciate the company I share in this milestone, but right now its the farthest thing from my mind. Were just trying to find a way to win one game." Nash found Antawn Jamison on a pick-and-roll with seconds left in the first half to reach the mark and finished the game with a total of 10,005 assists over his 17-year NBA career. The Rockets have rallied from double-digit deficits for their last three wins. As usual, they did it on Tuesday night behind the strong play of Harden, who has scored at least 25 points in 13 straight games. "They were short-handed tonight, but they are still tough," Harden said of the Lakers. "We knew we couldnt take them lightly. They did a great job in the first half of really getting easy shots on us. In the second half we started to pick it up defensively. We got out in transition and made some easy shots." "A little more attention to detail and well do better." Houston used a 10-2 spurt early in the third quarter to tie it at 69 after a three-point play by Marcus Morris with 6 1/2 minutes left in the quarter.
