David Moyes believes his Manchester United players will bounce back after suffering a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of rivals Manchester City.

However, Moyes is confident that his team will recover from the defeat and come back stronger.

"We didn't play well; they were better. They started much stronger and much quicker than us,” he told Sky Sports. "But we'll get better -- it's a long season to go. We'll put this behind us and move on.

"I think they got a grip of the game very early on, and we didn't. We never really got to grips with their midfield players in the early part of the game. Because of that, they started to get domination. We had to be stronger, but we weren't. But great credit to the lads that they kept going, kept working away and got a goal back.

He added: "If ever there was a group of players I would expect [a reaction from] that is Manchester United players. They react and that is what they will do. United were without the injured Robin van Persie, who has a groin problem that Moyes does not believe is serious.

“Obviously you miss Robin van Persie,” he said. “He is a huge miss to anyone. I don’t think it is going to be long. He just felt something in his groin in training. We didn’t want to aggravate it.”

Moyes added on Rooney's individual display: "I would say Wayne Rooney's performance today was outstanding. He certainly didn't deserve to be on the losing team, he was first-class."

United have picked up just seven points from their opening five games, having lost to Liverpool as well as City, while they have also drawn against Chelsea.

And Moyes reiterated his belief that United were handed an unfair set of opening matches by the Premier League fixture computer.

Moyes said: "We did say it was a difficult start, didn't we? I said at the time, the way the balls came out of the Premier League bag, I wasn't convinced... and I'm still not."
