At the tail end of the 2010 Formula One season, Sebastian Vettel got the wins when he needed them. Looking up at Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton after the Singapore Grand Prix with just four races to go, few could have expected Vettel to mount much of a late charge. After all, Vettel had won only two races on the year. However, the German turned it on to win three of the final four races and edge Alonso by four points for the Drivers Championship. This year, however, Vettel has taken charge from the very first green flag. Heading into the season finale in Brazil, Vettel has already clinched the Drivers Championship with a lead of more than 100 points over his current competitor. He has tied Nigel Mansells single-season record for pole positions captured with 14 in 1992. He has become just the second driver in F1 history after Michael Schumacher to win 10 races in one season, and has the chance to finish with the second highest win-total in history should he win his 12th race of the season in Brazil. So, the question begs: Is Vettels 2011 run the greatest single-season performance in Formula One history? First, consider the numbers. In 18 races, Vettel has won 12 poles and 11 checkered flags. He has only finished off the podium in Germany - where he finished fourth - and last week in Abu Dhabi where a punctured tire forced him off the track on the opening lap. He has already set the record for most points earned in a season with 374 to date. However, with a higher number of races now than there has been in the past – the circuit went to 19 races in 2010 – is Vettel benefitting from more opportunity? He still does not hold the single season wins record, which Schumacher set with 13 in 2004. His winning percentage of 61 percent is currently sixth amongst the all-time leaders. Schumachers numbers were higher in 2002 and 2004. Jim Clark won seven of 10 races in 1963. Back in the 1950s a pair of drivers - Alberto Ascari in 1952 and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1953 - dropped jaws with six wins apiece. Doesnt sound like much, but Ascari only ran eight races, while Fangio ran nine. Vettel also has not benefitted from the type of roll that many of his predecessors used to build their legends. His career-best four-race winning streak from the end of last season into the first two of 2011 is a feat that has been accomplished 11 times before him, but does not come close to the six- and seven-race streaks of Schumacher and Ascari. Hes also had the advantage of pole position. Vettel has only started second or lower four times this year, giving him a head start on the field. Schumacher won five races in 2004 coming from behind, including four in a row between the Canadian and British Grand Prix races. Even his qualifying record - which he can take sole possession of in Brazil - benefits from the extra races. Nigel Mansells 14 and a pair of lucky 13s from Ayrton Senna in 1988 and 1989 came with only 16 races on the slate. But theres one more number to be considered: 24. His age.
