Twenty three-year-old winger Matt Frattin has a shot at making the Toronto Maple Leafs roster out of training camp this year. General Manager Brian Burke is high enough on the former fourth-round pick that he mentioned him along with Nazem Kadri and Joe Colborne when asked which prospect he thought had the best chance to claim the Leafs open forward spot heading into training camp. But it was almost all for naught. Frattin played his junior hockey at the University of North Dakota, where at one point he was dismissed from the team after being arrested for driving under the influence. "You want to go to college, you want to have your fun, but you have to learn the lines that you cant cross and you can cross," said Frattin. "I learned that in a different way than others. It was a learning experience." Getting kicked off the team may have been the wakeup call Frattin needed. It was his second arrest that year – the first was for disorderly conduct – and the winger later admitted he underperformed early in his time at North Dakota because he partied too much. But rather than sign with the Maple Leafs right away, Frattin decided to return to the team for his senior season, despite no longer having a scholarship. With a new attitude, the Edmonton, Alberta native finally played up to his potential, setting personal highs in goals (36) and assists (24) on the way to being named the WCHA Player of the Year and a Hobey Baker Award finalist. "It was a really warm welcoming from the coaching staff and the teammates (upon returning), but I still had to prove to myself that I was coming back to school for the right reasons." "(I) had a great off-season going into my senior year and just came prepared the best I could." After all the experiences he went through, Frattin says he can help other young players stay on the straight and narrow. "The kind of things that I went through, I dont want other guys - younger players - to go through. Its a tough experience to have to go through. "So I just try and lead them on the right route and if theyre kind of getting out of hand with the off-ice issues I try and just send a message to them with words and actions." Frattin signed with Toronto late last year after North Dakotas season was over, and played in one game with the Leafs. Heading into training camp this year, hell have a chance to turn his limited experience into a full-time gig with the team. Frattin said that he has continued to improve since his short stint with Toronto last year. "(Im) more of a well-rounded two-way player. I try to make offensive opportunities but I also try to focus on the defensive aspect of my game." The Leafs wrap up their rookie tournament action against the Ottawa Senators prospects Tuesday night in Oshawa.
