ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers recalled left-hander Michael Kirkman from Triple-A Round Rock and out-righted right-hander Brett Tomko to the same club prior to Friday nights game against the Kansas City Royals. Kirkman went 1-3 with a 5.35 earned-run average in 10 games for Round Rock. Hes in his second stint with the Rangers this season, having allowed six runs in 1 2-3 innings on April 19. Kirkman had a 1.65 ERA in 14 games out of the Texas bullpen last season. Manager Ron Washington said Kirkman will take some of the workload from the Rangers two veteran left-handed relievers, 40-year-old Darren Oliver and 41-year-old Arthur Rhodes. "Trying to protect the two lefties weve got," Washington said. "Theyve been getting the ball pretty often." Tomko went 0-1 with a 4.58 ERA in eight bullpen outings after his contract was purchased from Round Rock on April 20. He cleared waivers and accepted the minor league assignment, with the possibility of rejoining the Rangers later in the season. Right-hander Brandon Webb had his final bullpen session Friday before he begins a minor league rehab assignment. Hes scheduled to start for Double-A Frisco on Monday night. The 2006 NL Cy Young winner for the Arizona Diamondbacks is currently on the 60-day disabled list. Hes attempting to come back from right rotator cuff surgery in August 2009. Washington monitored Webbs bullpen stint and said, "I see progress." Right-handers Scott Feldman and Tommy Hunter also threw in the bullpen Friday, but neither has been scheduled for a minor league rehab assignment. Feldman (right knee surgery) and Hunter (strained right groin) are both on the 15-day disabled list. Washington also kept a close watch on slugger Josh Hamilton, who shagged balls and is close to playing in the outfield again. Hamilton has been the designated hitter in each of his three games since returning from a 36-game absence due to a broken bone in his right shoulder. Hamilton has said hell resume his spot in left field sometime this weekend, and is expected to play the position on Saturday night. Centre fielder Julio Borbon is getting closer to a return from the 15-day disabled list due to a sore left hamstring, but he needs to test the leg in the outfield and on the bases before he can begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators felt good after their 3-1 defeat of the Washington Capitals on Monday, their first back-to-back victory in 51 days and their first three-game winning streak at the Canadian Tire Centre this season. The NHLPA says the Calgary Flames cannot mandate its players wear protective foot and ankle equipment commonly known as "shotblockers." Flames general manager Jay Feaster instructed his players get fitted for the guards after Calgary captain Mark Giordano suffered a broken ankle and veteran forward Lee Stempniak broke his foot after being hit by pucks last month. Flames players have informed the Players Association they were strongly encouraged by Flames management to wear the shotblockers, but were told the equipment wasnt mandatory. However, Feaster says this is a mandatory team policy which may create a problem as such a policy could be viewed as a CBA violation. (CBA 30.3 Amendments -- The NHL and its Clubs shall not, during the term of this Agreement or any extension thereof, amend or modify the provisions (or portions thereof) of the League Rules or any of the Leagues Playing Rules in existence on the date of this Agreement that affect any terms or conditions of employment of any Player, without the prior written consent of the NHLPA which shall not be unreasonably withheld. The NHL shall furnish proposed amendments to and/or modifications of League Rules that affect any terms or conditions of employment of any Player upon the NHLPAs written request.) "No team can unilaterally make a piece of eqquipment mandatory," Mathieu Schneider, Special Assistant to NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr, told the Dreger Report.dddddddddddd Equipment discussions and proposed changes are expected to funnel through the newly-formed equipment sub-committee before moving on to the joint competition committee and, ultimately, to the board for final approval. All Flames players are complying with managements policy and are currently wearing some form of additional foot protection. The NHLPA intends on reaching out to the NHL to discuss its concerns with Calgarys approach. While very sensitive to why the Flames are doing what they are doing, Schneider worries about "knee-jerk" reactions by NHL clubs and the potential for unintended consequence, such as another injury if teams are allowed to armor their players without going through the appropriate procedural steps. Schneider points toward the ongoing work being done between the league and PA on potential changes to shoulder pads as an example of how thorough the process of full-scale equipment changes has to be. Years ago, players opted for a much larger shoulder pad for added protection. Now, the focus is on developing a smaller and less damaging shoulder pad, in hindsight, correcting an issue that was created by good intentions and in the spirit of safety. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
